eczema!

So Friday night is one of my favs of the week for one reason: Doctor Who.  I wish to God we got BBC 1 over here in the states, instead of being half a season or so behind at any given time.  It's not like they have to translate the thing into English or anything, right?

Plus, I don't know when, if at all, anyone (Sci-Fi being the obvious choice) will start broadcasting Torchwood.  A recent post of Neil Gaiman's made me very jealous, as he references getting "a pile of illicit Torchwoods" (scroll down, it's after Lou Reed and before the didgeridoo).  Erin--
uselessplayback-- is a love and burned the first episode on a dvd for me, and reading about Neil's stash is making me jones for a fix...or whatever it is you druggie kids say these days.  I miss Captain Jack!

Anyway, so this most recent (state-side) Doctor Who episode, "Love & Monsters" (BBC page & Sci-Fi page), was a little strange.  For one thing, the Doctor and Rose are only in it about 5 minutes tops.  It presents sort of an "outsider" view of the ever-shifting world surrounding the TARDIS, and features Shirley Henderson (otherwise known as Harry Potter's Moaning Myrtle).

My parents actually sat down to watch this one with me, my mom saying that's I was going to need to explain all of the continuous stuff to her.  So I explained the TARDIS and felt knowledgeble and helpful.  Then I pointed out who the Doctor was, which earned me a "I know who David Tennent is, Kelly," from my mom.  That woman watches so much BBC, I swear.  Just...you know...not actually on the BBC.  After that...there wasn't a whole lot to explain.  My dad kept going, "Who's that guy?  Is he an alien?  Why are they doing that, where's the Doctor?" and I had no answers outside of frustration and growling.  At the end, after Victor Kennedy ("Abzorbaloff?") from the sister planet of Raxacoricofallapatorius, Clom...melts, and there is some discussion of romantic relations between men and pieces of slate, my dad turned and gave me this look.  You know, the "how did I manage to sire you" look.

On the whole, it was a cute episode with a few stand-out moments.  There was the Scooby-Doo chase scene, the ELO dance sequence, plus a scattering of season 1 refs, to Bad Wolf and Slitheens.  Also, of course, a reference to Torchwood.*  They manage to sum it up rather neatly in one line from Elton Pope: "When you're a kid, they tell you it's all ... grow up. Get a job. Get married. Get a house. Have a kid, and that's it. But the truth is, the world is so much stranger than that. It's so much darker. And so much madder. And so much better" (courtesy of wikiquote)

*the linked site is a neat one, but can be frustrating to navigate.  The boring ole BBC one is here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/torchwood/index_nonflash.shtml
