I discovered his wonderful music last summer: for me Mahler started wiht 5th symphony. It was in a concert hall, the conductor had to be Vladimir Ashkenazy, but he's got sick, and the other young conductor (Andrey Boreiko-I first heard this name) was on the stage with the European Union orchestra. I've never heard something most amazing before! This symphony thrilled me so much, that my face was in tears, and I could not go out this feeling - almost trans ( if admiration can be called like this). So much love and pain, and all so sincere! As Arnold Schoenberg said (hope, I'm not wrong), in this symphony we can see Mahler as he is, with his naked soul, without any mask.
As I am a mezzo-soprano singer, there is a lot of songs for me in Mahler's oeuvre. I started with Liebst du um Schönheit and Blicke mir nicht in die Lieder ( from 5 Rückert Lieder), and Rheinlegendchen ( from Des Knaben Wundehorn). Singing these songs makes me really happy! I can confirm, that he is really MY composer.
I'm very interested, if someone of you also tries to interpret Mahler's music (maybe as a conductor, singer or orchestra musician?). Waiting for comments!:)
