Chapter 3

“Bestfriend…… is that all he is to her? Is that all he will always be?”

All the happiness he felt that day are washed down the drain as the load of rejection and disappointment filled his being. He already knew the DEAL, why does it hurt to hear from her. Is it because all this time, he hoped that they could be something more?

“Right Jun-niichan?” Jun is brought back from his deep thoughts. He looks at the occupants in the room. The change of Jun’s expression did not go unnoticed to everyone except for Mao, who is smiling sweetly at him.

“Ha?” He stared at Mao for a moment, not knowing how to react.

“I said you will always be my big brother for life.” The last sentence added the nail to his coffin.

“I told you I could never be your brother.” How can she be so oblivious of his feelings? He sees her pout on his statement, which always made his heart do somersaults. This is one habit of hers he always find cute. But how could she be so clueless of her surroundings.

“Fine, I’ll just ask Toma to be my big brother from now on.” She walks back to her seat and placed her hands on his shoulder. “Is it alright Toma-kun?”

Jun stared at Toma as he waits for the answer. Toma didn’t know what to do. He didn’t want to get involved.

“Come on kids, we should finish the food before they go to waste.” Toma is relieved when Jun’s mum spoke to break the tension of the room. He should really go.

“A someone as clumsy and immature as you, you’re only a liability. I already had hard time looking after you. Toma is busy enough with his own life to look after someone else.” Jun averted his gaze down to the food in front of him. Where did that come from? He couldn’t keep his mouth shut from all the feelings brewing inside.

Mao’s smile fades away for a moment as she looks at him, poking his food without appetite.

She then smile, a tear brimming in her eyes “I didn’t know I was such a burden to you. I won’t bother you anymore.” She rise up from her seat and bowed to his mum who was silently observing them. “Sumimasen Auntie. Honto Arigatou for the food. I’ll take my leave first”

She takes one last glance at Jun who averted his gaze from her the moment their eyes met, and proceeded out of the house.

“Sorry Auntie, I think I should go as well.” Toma took his stand and bowed. Jun’s mum rose up from her seat as well and ushered Toma out.

Jun is left alone in the dining room. He heaved a big sigh as he hangs his head. He didn’t know what came to him. Why he said those words. Everyone thinks he’s pathetic and is rightly so. He is pathetic.

He massages the back of his neck when he noticed his necklace. Tracing down to the angel pendant, a new feeling runs through his soul. He held the necklace tighter as he closes his eyes.

The day didn’t start well for her. She should have known it won’t end well as well. Closing her bedroom door, she drops her bag and runs to the bed, crushing her face onto the pillow to seek refuge from her aching heart.

Inoue Mao thinks she knows him. She feels she could trust Matsumoto Jun her life. If only he knows how she truly feels. But then, it won’t make any effect. If things would have been different, Maybe they could have a chance. But now, all that is only a wish that will never come true.
