And so it begins - serious Live Music happened the last few days - and more on the horizon.
*TMBG - October 19th*
While visiting
oldest_song in Boston, we went to see They Might Be Giants at the Roxy. Good medium to smallish venue with good sound and great atmosphere. Last time I saw them was at the Woodland Park Zoo for the children's show - this was *much much* better. Confident if slightly laid back energy, hilarious crowd banter [they introduced their horn section as "The Velcro Horns" - I can't for the life of me remember the spontaneously proposed moniker - perhaps my external memory device, aka Ms. Vega, will recall...], and high energy performances of stuff ranging from "Istanbul not Constantinople" to songs from the new album [The Else] like "With the Dark", to a couple songs from the children's album [Here Come the ABCs]. "E Eats Everything" is still one of my faves. :)
The live stuff from the The Else was exceptional. Highly recommended if they come around again.
*Pinback - October 22nd*
Last night,
deanbiron,
sophia_katt and I went to see Pinback at the Showbox [aside: I love walking distance shows from my new pad]. For those readers unfamiliar with the Seattle venue, medium capacity and excellent sound. The show was *packed* - and
sophia_katt joked that she and I were probably the oldest individuals in the crowd. It was fun to watch the youngsters. ;)
I'll let
sophia_katt tell the story of the LA party girl. Hilarious.
The first couple of songs were shaky, but once they hit "Microtronic Wave", things gelled and they took off. Zack Smith broke another bass string [that's twice now in the five or six times I've seen them]. Only down side - his voice sounded a bit strained the entire night. Rob's vocals were solid and soaring as ever. They played stuff from the past few albums - nothing off the self-titled debut - a good chunk off the new "Autumn of the Seraphs" - and they all sounded better live than recorded. A-rated show. They will be returning in the Spring - must see if you have a chance.
