Elizabeth: The Golden Age - Capsule Review

I won't spend too much time on this. A sadly disappointing film - giving it **1/2 out of *****. Cate Blanchett (Elizabeth) shines when she has meat in the script - but when the dialog is reduced to cliches and swooning schoolgirl romance, it's hard to stomach. Clive Owen (Sir Walter Raleigh) does what he can with his lines - and his earnestness is admirable - but *gods* the dialog made my skin crawl. Geoffrey Rush (Walsingham) is sadly underplayed - and a shadow of his role in the first film. No, I do not think this is clever film-making referencing his growing age in the Queen's court - I think it's evidence of a Producer driven script and lowest common denominator simplification.

I agree with the majority of the reviewers in the link below ranking 5 out of 10 or less. The reviews are worth a gander, the film is not - until it comes out on DVD.

For you historians, yes, the fallacies abound. The biggie being Sir Walter Raleigh and not Sir Francis Drake leading the English fleet against the Spanish Armada. *shakes head*
