Well, I'm in Iowa right now. Everyone else has gone to bed and I'm still on West coast time, plus am a big night person. It's been lots of fun here so far, but I'll describe a little later in the week, once things get rolling. Guy took me out the night before I left to that Brazilian place downtown, then around DT and a movie too. He cracks me up sometimes. Plus I love giving him crap too. This is an excerpt from one of our after-dinner conversations:
Guy - "I think Reform is pretty much a half-assed approach to Judaism. It makes excuses for you to be a bad Jew. When I go to services, it's usually the Conservative ones."
Me - "Oh, well all of the Conservatives I've known are pretty strict, like they keep kosher and stuff."
Guy - "Well I try to keep kosher. Like, I took that bacon off of my turkey and steak."
Me - "Oh, really? Well you ate that chicken and cheese thing that guy brought us. Twice."
Guy - "Well, I'm out somewhere, what am I gonna say? Ask him if he can please scrape the cheese off?"
Me - "Well, what about the babyback ribs? Aren't those made of pork?"
Guy - "Umm, I'm not sure. And if I don't know for sure, then I can pretend."
me - "Well, I'm pretty sure they're pork."
Guy - "Well, when I'm at home I try to keep kosher. I mean, if I make something, I try not to mix the meat and dairy."
me - "Well, when people keep kosher, they have the two separate refrigerators. I only saw one refridge at your place. Do you have a second one hidden away somewhere that I just didn't see?"
Guy - "Umm--well--no..."
me - "So, what was it you were saying about Reform Judaism?"
LOL! I was actually still laughing about that on the plane the next day. I bet the people sitting next to me thought I was weird, but I guess, they would think that no matter what. Well, that conversation, plus us getting to see some of the Harri Krishna parade, made it a night of good ole relgiousy fun (which I also love, of course). Anyway, it was a super fun night-before my trip. He spent WAY too much money on me that night and it made me feel sort of guilty. At least I offered, but I still felt guilty that he spent so much on me. I've never known any guy who has done that before, so it's fun too. I'll just have to find something uniquely Iowan to bring back for him. Hmm, Maybe I giant, lifesized buttermilk cow. I bet he'd like that. He'd probably forget though and mix it with some cheese and pork ribs.
