I officially Do Not Appreciate Dan Brown. I don't think it's worth my time and effort to enumerate all the ways Angels & Demons is an awful, awful book, but I will say that I cannot think of a single positive thing to say about it. I am not being melodramatic; rather, I am telling the honest truth when I say I involuntarily wretched a couple of times while listening to it.
The narrator of this particular recording was godawful, as well. He mispronounced every SAT word Brown shoehorned in to his pretentious, condescending, cliche-riddled prose, he has clearly never actually heard an Australian accent before - the Aussie sounded like a caricature of a Boston mobster - and, after he had read through the scene with the Australian guy, the British character suddenly sounded like he had just gotten back from the southern hemisphere...which wasn't too much of a surprise, because he only had a British accent half the time, anyway. I was so pleasantly shocked when he gave "controversy" the proper RP accent in the final chapters that I very nearly cheered.
It's a measure of just how bad the book is, then, that I'm still reserving nearly all of my wrathful irritation for the author.
Angels & Demons is pretty much a master class on how not to write.
Please feel free to quote me on that and throw it back in my face when my novels suck, too; if I turn out anything half as bad as this, I will have earned it.
