"What did he say? What did he say?!"

This is why I read Peter David's blog.  Best thing I've seen all day, and I watched multiple Golden Girls episodes* and "The Beast Below"**, saw a picture of Neil Gaiman with Amber Benson***, and read Spike #4.  Hee.

And speaking of Spike, I've definitely decided to NOT read Brian Lynch's blog again until the series is over.  The end of #4 could ( Read more... )

(Been a while since I had occasion to use THIS avatar. Doing so on account of talking about Darkwing Duck in general, I mean.)

Anyway, ummm...

....ummmm....

I hate to admit this, since you're finally talking about something I DO know (Doctor Who--and Peter David, although I don't know his _comic_ writing) but...

I don't _get_ why "Don't you think she looks tired" is awesome?

(hides)

Is that an Eleven thing? Would I be yelling ALLONS-Y! if I was hip to the new-series groove? 'Cos I'm still working my way back through Nine's stuff, in my Do Everything In Order crusade. A Spike thing? A...I have no idea what universe it's from, in-joke?

In other news, we have just gotten around to opening up your Awesome British Stuff Basket (we were saving it until after the homemade cookies were eaten up, and we had _ordinary_ cookies already in the house before THAT at Christmastime--and pies) and more on that later, but I can say: Awesome Basket is AWESOME!
...also, if I send you HUGE packets of notes on stuff, you are _not required to answer any of it_. Just so you know. I wrote them down 'cos I found them interesting and wanted to share it with you, that's all.

Oh, and the "mini-Lanterns" have been posted to DeviantArt, but aren't getting much love. I've more or less decided _not_ to post the one you've all seen of ME as a GL...it turned out pretty, yeah...but nobody's gonna get that it was a silly whim. It's gonna come across totally Mary Sue. :\ (Which is a shame, 'cos that picture has better "special effects" than I've ever done in anything else...)

Last but not least, have you seen Hero Maker 3? Doesn't look like much on the surface and still, in my opinion, has a LOTTA bugs to work out (I'm thinking about writing the guy and telling him the feature it needs the _most_: Not a new type of clothing style or hairdo or body pose, but an UNDO BUTTON) but then again it _is_ an Alpha.

Still, the amount of _customization_ you can do with this thing...! What it mainly boils down to, is that if it doesn't have quite what you want, you no longer have to Put Up With, Make Do, or Close Enough Ha Ha Not Really as with normal character-makers. Instead, now, if they don't have what you want, you can take stuff that does exist and stretch it, squish it, flip it, double it, layer them and turn them upside-down. Like most of something but not one part? Layer something else innocuously over it. (You're no longer limited in your amount of layers--at least, not like the earlier Hero Makers were.) Like a hairdo but it's too short or long? Change the dimensions. Many of the body parts are now modular, allowing for wildly different poses than before--sitting, flying, kneeling, crossed legs/arms, the ever-popular "running at the reader!" pose from like, every comic book cover everywhere...

And the fact that you can change proportions on everything means that everybody doesn't have to be Heroically Muscular, or have the exact one or two pairs of eyes that are vaguely acceptable looking. You can do individual features, face-shapes, tall or short characters, fat or scrawny ones. And group shots! For that Dynamic Duo vibe. :)
You can also make scenes from entirely different genres than superhero/science-fiction, if you put togther the right elements--for example, I managed to do Rapunzel, and make it look like the Prince had his _back_ to the camera.

YES, I've been playing with it. Bwahahah. ;)
Anyway, thought you and anybody else who might actually put up with my rambling, should know about it. Heh.

The "Don't You Think She Looks Tired" photo meme thing is a _Ten_ thing, and so I don't want to tell you any more about it until you tell me how much (if any) of Ten's run you've seen. Just 'cause it's a HUGE plot deal. :)

P.S. Fun photo of you as a Green Lantern?? Share! Share! ;-D

HAHAH! _Photo_ of me as a Green Lantern. Oh I WISH I was skinny enough to wear spandex without being immediately embarrassed to death. I'd probably go for the classic Hal Jordan/used to be everybody's version--"dorky" white gloves 'n' all. One thing about that uniform--if you're a woman wearing that, you're a female superhero wearing a turtleneck and flats. Much easier to fight evil in.

No, it was a _drawing_ of "me" as a GL, that I did for fun, last year when I first got into this. I _think_ you've seen it, but it was a while ago. I thought it was great...now that I look at it again I'm like AA THE PROPORTIONS AAA. And the fancy background means I can't try to shift things around without it being obvious, since that would change the background.
Anyway, yeah, I had fun with it. Made up my own custom outfit--vaguely '60s influenced, has layers, and looks sturdier/more comfortable than your average superhero wear. And I didn't idealise myself that much--made myself skinny enough to fit into that costume, but I'm not a stick with huge boobs. :P The hair and features are about right, in a cartoony way.

_Photo_, however, no. The only picture of real-life me as a comic book character I have on hand is when I was (movie-version) Rogue for Halloween once, years ago. Heh. (And it isn't a very good picture. Or costume. It was a last-second thing--"I know! I'll do a silver stripe in my hair, put on my black leather jacket and black leather gloves, and be Rogue! Yeah!" We made an X on each shoulder of the jacket, out of duct tape.
DUCT. TAPE.)

Anyway enough of THAT...I haven't seen very far into Ten's run either, actually. I got up to the Devil Planet two-parter and then decided to back up and watch only the older stuff, instead of trying to do both at the same time. I figured that'd be too confusing. :P

Seems I was right on the "Allons-y!" though, right? ;) (I mean, that I picked a TEN phrase to shout out there...)

The line in question is from "The Christmas Invasion," which, if you recall, is the special that goes between "Parting of the Ways" and "New Earth"* that you got confused with "Runaway Bride" the first time through? BizOp did a lovely job of explaining the scene and why that macro had the effect on her that it did, but I've deleted it because it has spoilers involving a major plot development for a supporting character you already know but haven't yet seen post-S1/27. I'm going to repost it as a reply to this comment in case you want to read it.

* Uh... The order is actually "Parting of the Ways," the Children in Need special (sometimes called "Barcelona," "Christmas Invasion, "Attack of the Graske," _then_ "New Earth," and I definitely recommend you watch them all that way ("Attack of the Graske" is very silly and frustrating, in that you can't actually answer the questions and have to look on, helpless, as "you" continually let The Doctor down, but it has some merit).

CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR "CHRISTMAS INVASION" magratpudifoot January 16 2011, 19:43:37 UTC
(This is a re-post of BizOp's reply. She used her Batman "So...?" icon. I have somehow gotten this far in my life without getting a Batman icon, so I'm going to have to settle for the closest thing I've got. Heh.)

Whoops -- *picture* of GL, not photo. My bad. ;-) Well, it still sounds awesome ...

(I've gotten very fond of the Green Lantern Corps in just the past few months ...)

At any rate -- if you saw the Devil Planet two-parter of Ten's run, then you saw The Christmas Invasion (Ten's first-ever full episode), which is where the quote originated from, so I'm safe to explain: Remember when Harriet Jones, the new Prime Minister, blows up the Sycorax spaceship? So to topple her regime -- as well as to get revenge, really -- the Doctor promises her that he can stop her with a word. No, not one word ... but six. Just six.

And then he walks up to her aide, and murmurs, "... don't you think she looks tired?"

And, thanks to chaos theory, that's all it takes. And because of the power of Doctor Who, that Palin picture gives me CHILLS. (And I don't even LIKE Palin!)

1) See above for my spoiler warning and BizOp's explanation of the macro.

2) I'm very glad you are enjoying the basket of tea goodies! I have personally never had any of the lemon ginger cookies, but I threw them in because I thought they sounded tasty. I take it I should go get some for myself? And I've never tried that brand of lemon curd, but I bought some a few days ago for the triple-layer lemon cake I'm going to be making soon, and I'm looking forward to giving it a taste.

3) I haven't been by DeviantArt lately, but I have new stuff to post (not the GL picture, no, but it's finally next up on my art to-do list), and "mini-Lanterns" is intriguingly adorable and adorably intriguing. I'll definitely swing by and comment soon. As for your GLed version of yourself, you don't actually have to _say_ it's supposed to be you if you want to post it. And I shouldn't worry about it being thought of as a Mary Sue, anyway. I mean, with all the "Simpsonize yourself!" and the South Park maker and various other sorts of generators out there these days, plenty of people have wanted to see what they might look like in a particular style. You just did all the work yourself, which I think is to be commended. Besides, it's a really neat picture!

4) I haven't even heard of the 3rd generation Hero Maker before now, but I have a feeling I'll be playing with it a good deal in the coming days. Hee.
