It's a Snow Day!

I'm glad to be inside today, not needing to be anyplace special, with my crocheting and my computer, and my hubby here at home with me.  Color me thankful.

Pennsylvania Governor closes I-78, I-176, Other highways

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Governor Ed Rendell has ordered the closing of several interstate highways in Pennsylvania, including all of Interstates 78 and 176.

The wind and snow crippled tractor trailers and left roads covered on I-78 in Berks County, an unwelcome case of deja vu.It was three years ago this week that snow and ice left drivers stranded and PennDOT helpless against the elements.

State officials tried to ward off a repeat disaster by closing the entire stretch of I-78 and other highways this afternoon.

They will remain closed until after the snow is abated and PEMA will have a follow-up announcement reopening the roads once we deem them safe for driving, said Governor Ed Rendell.

Even after the announcement, officials in Hamburg said traffic remained on I-78 because of blocked and unpassable off-ramps.

Even those who live near I-78 struggled to make it home.

It's just getting worse, said Mike Davis of Strausstown. That's all. I just want to go home, lay down, watch TV, not be out in this stuff.

Other closures aimed to keep people off the roads. Interstate 176 in Berks County remained off limits to all drivers. And there were travel restrictions on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Most large trucks were being rerouted from the Turnpike along with RV's and passenger vehicles hauling trailers.

The speed limit is also down to 45 on all state highways. But instead of going slow, authorities hope you won't go at all.

We have deemed that the roads, because of these high winds and visibility conditions, are not safe for any driving whatsoever, said Gov. Rendell.

69 News spoke with a trucker who got stuck on I-78 at 11:15 this morning and was sitting there for nearly four hours when we caught up with him. He said he has been driving for 12 years and has only been stuck in a snowstorm once before.

Also closed in Pennsylvania were Interstates 83, Interstate 81 from the Maryland line to Interstate 80, and the non-turnpike sections of Interstates 76, 476, and 676.

Rendell said it is important people only call 911 in an emergency. He said it should not be called for any other reason.

Me here: I just gotta ask why anyone would call 911 if it were NOT an emergency.  That he has to say it reveals the level of just plain stupid going on out there.  *sigh*
