so there are lots of things to get used to when living in a different country
i think i've done pretty well so far-
the cold is manageable, the bike riding everywhere seems less ridiculous,
i can understand enough dutch to respond to questions, hell even the fact that
most stores don't stay open past five doesn't bother me
(although, if I had a full time job or even class after three it might)
what i cannot get used to is the bread situation here.
thats right, bread. most grocery stores seem to either
bake their own bread or have it delivered every day. great. fine.
the selection is different than in the states, obviously.
there is a pretty good range of white breads and brown breads and fancy breads.
what amazes me is the amount of bread a grocery store will have on hand.
to this day i don't think i've gone into a store and had the choice
of five or more loaves. not even types, but loaves.
I have gone in right before the store closes (in which case there is a loaf. or none)
but I've also gone in at a decent hour, maybe three or so hours before they close.
and still there very few loaves left. this continues to baffle and irk me.
do all the good house vrouwen get up early in the morning to pillage the local grocery store of all bread? maybe they just dont start with much bread? do the employees have my picture somewhere and hid all the bread before i enter the store?
(I'm fairly convinced that every time i walk in there the employees are thinking 'oh, theres that crazy girl who speaks dutch with the thick american accent and only buys ice cream and cigarettes. I wonder why she never buys bread'.)
Today I went to the store down the street to find bread.
Good white bread for making french toast for christmas morning.
I was rather proud of myself- going to the grocery store at a decent hour. Surely I would have my pick. Nope. I then biked the twenty minutes into Leiden to go to a bigger grocery store. Three loaves of white bread left.
For the love of jesus. Someone should send me some Wonder Bread. or some Texas Toast. or both. I'm certain the first time i go into an american grocery store i'm going to lose my head and end up with eight loaves of bread. and some pinto beans.
