The New 7 Wonders

Apr 29, 2006 02:53

I love history and a little bit of Science. I was reading Science news and came across this article which sounded familiar, but I realized that I'd forgotten all about it.

There is this group that has decided that they'd like a new set of seven wonders of the world and not surprisingly are calling it The New 7 Wonders. It's an interesting prospect. They feel that all but one of the original Seven Wonders are gone, and they'd like to pick out seven which exist today. As I was reading about it in the original news article, it sounded suspiciously like a political push for "culture", but in the end I decided that I still liked the idea even if it's not for the same reasons that they have come up with.

Anyone can vote for the 21 finalists and naturally I had to vote. ;o) I mean, I just had to!

If anyone is interested, here are my picks and they're in no particular order.

  • Stonehenge
  • The Great Wall of China
  • The Statues of Easter Island
  • The Pyramids of Giza (naturally, and it's the only one still standing from the original Seven Wonders)
  • The Ruins of Machu Picchu
  • The Acropolis of Athens
  • The Roman Colosseum

That's my seven, but they were difficult choices to make.

I was rather surprised at the Eiffel Tower and Statue of Liberty. Those are so modern that I don't consider them wonders at all. I feel that they're more like national symbols rather than a wonder. I suppose in a sense being national symbols makes them a wonder, but I wouldn't think so. I can't help feeling the way I do because I'm such a history geek. I feel that history should come before nationality.

I was rather amused of the date they chose to announce the winners. According to the news article, the original date was set for January 1, 2007 but clearly someone came up with the bright idea of 07/07/07, because that is the date listed now. I have to admit that it's a bit more fitting. :P

Are any of you going to vote? Do you feel like sharing your picks?

Love to all! ♥
