Today was the first day of work at Willowbrook and on my way home I drove by a house on fire. On fire! The street was empty and there were no police or firemen or spectators. There was only this house at the end of a cul-de-sac, engulfed in flames like I've never seen before, with a black, black column of smoke rising from the roof. I feel terrible for this but it didn't even occur to me to call 911. I parked my car and went to sit on the lawn across the street and I watched it burn. Cinders were falling like snow and the air was acrid and it was very hot and the flames were everywhere. Have you ever seen a building on fire? It is incredible! It is fearsome and awesome and mind-numbing.
The police and firemen were there before long. Crowds gathered outside. People took pictures with their phones. People stood frowning on nearby lawns and sidewalks. People seemed more amazed than horrified. People are no doubt feeling guilty that they care so little. People are no doubt exploiting the situation for their artistic gain. People are sensationalists. People like to write about this shit in their livejournals.
