Cole is off stealing bikes on campus. Not really plural bikes, just one bike. Stealing multiple bikes in one trip would be rather conspicuous. He is stealing the bike which he picked out earlier in the day, when we were out on an abandoned-and-easily-stealable-bikes-around-campus tour. See, the dorms closed on Saturday and all students and their possessions are required to be gone. There are quite a few bikes left at the dorms, though. They are mostly not very good bikes, highly neglected bikes. Sometime in the next week the police will come through and cut the locks and take them and then the university will auction them off. Cole has been wanting an extra bike to loan to friends so it seemed like a good time for bike harvesting. We spent a while going from dorm to dorm and scoping out bikes and finally found one that was not too shabby and was locked through the wheel (meaning that the wheel could be popped off and the bike could be taken). Now he's off to claim it. I don't think that it really counts as stealing if the thing was obviously abandoned (which it was, given that there are no longer any students in the dorms) but the police would see it differently. They are probably not trying too hard to prevent bike theft, though, as I have noticed many many unattached wheels locked on the bike racks around campus in the past few days. Apparently other people had the same idea as us.
There are all sorts of student-abandoned things to claim right now, really. We found a couch upside-down on a curb, a pretty decent couch, no stains or tears. We found some chairs in alleys. We found a big pile of clothes in a recycling bin. Plates by the side of the road.
I am very amused by this comic from the portland opera blogger night-
