I went to an informational about jobs with the State Department today. Unfortunately the presentation focused on the Foreign Service, and managed to cement my thoughts that the Foreign Service is not for me. Not now at least, and not in the foreseeable future. Not only do I seriously doubt that I could pass the foreign service exam, but the people giving the presentation said pretty clearly that you should finish all of the schooling that you want to do before entering the foreign service. Since, at the moment I really only want a job that will allow me to get into a good Economics PhD program that job is not in the Foreign Service. I also learned that even if buy some strange twist of fate I passed the exam I wouldn’t qualify because of my JRA. Oh well.
I had hoped that they would talk about the civil service, but they didn’t.
The only major revelation that came out of the whole ordeal was that I discovered something new about myself. I look down upon people who chose easy languages. I privately scoffed at the people whose language of choice was French. I smirked at people who chose German. I looked down my nose at people who were learning Spanish. I speak Chinese. State wants me more…
But I don’t want them.
