The Corps

I also decided that while having the corps housing next door is nice at night when they are all walking around without their shirts on it is extremely annoying in the morning when all of the corps boys are out marching about in formation. I have discovered that the easiest way to get anywhere from Underwood is to go straight through the quad… That is, it is the easiest route as long as it is after the corps finish practicing. When they are still out it is pretty difficult to go around all of the little marching squads.
The fighting aggie band is also rather entertaining. They are all in the corps, of course. And there have been several days this week when I have heard them yelling. Before today their random screaming was just random and slightly annoying, but today I watched them for a little while in the morning and discovered the true nature of the screaming. While I was unlocking my bike so that I could ride out to the West Campus parking garage where Freckles is doomed to reside I saw the euphoniums. They were moving as a section across the field… but not marching. They were running with their horns waving above their heads, and they were screaming. It was hilarious!
So… basically I can’t quite figure out whether or not I’m fond of the corps. They are annoying… sometimes. But they are also amazingly entertaining. One night when Erin and Farheen and I were watching Notting Hill we saw the corps boys in the dorms next to us start running around like crazy little ants. Apparently they had forgotten about lights out, or something of the sort and still had much to do before they went to bed. Needless to say we didn’t actually watch most of the movie, because it was so much more entertaining to look through their windows.
Of course, that made me all the more certain that they would watch through my window if there was anything interesting to see. So I close my blinds at night and don’t open them again until I’m dressed in the morning.
On that note, I must say that the corps guys are amazingly friendly. A&M is apparently known for being friendly and saying “howdy” but the corps boys take it to another level. With some people you can avert your eyes, and not make eye contact so they don’t say “Howdy” to you. Corps Boys just run around saying Howdy to everyone, and you can’t just avert your eyes, because they YELL Howdy and make sure that you know they are saying Howdy to YOU. And then you have to say Howdy in return, it is expected. Unfortunately, instead of making me feel as though the campus is open and friendly it makes my think of Nazi Germany. All of the Nazi’s had to wander around saying “Hile Hitler!” and if they didn’t they were considered to be traitors and were either shot or sent to a concentration camp. So I think, if I don’t say “Howdy” will I be sent to an Aggie concentration camp… or maybe I’ll just be taken out back and shot, so at the very least they can have Silver Taps at the small cost of an un-aggie-like student.
No, I don’t really feel that way. But it is an interesting train of thought.
I do like A&M, for all of my Aggie bashing, and I can’t wait until class starts so that I can get to know some of the people in my classes and make some new friends. It is a little odd, but I don’t know how to make friends… it just kind of happens. I’m not very outgoing anymore, I prefer to just hang back and watch. I’m definitely a people watcher, but I’m also a people person in my own way. Oh well, we’ll see what happens.
