Not all of us are this way, you know... just the Washington natives... oh, and anyone south of Nebraska.

Considering you and Raif come from an area where every square inch of the entire state or province looks exactly like every other one, you could be forgiven for assuming that all of Washington is just like Seattle. But you won't be forgiven, at least by me.

I was raised outside the Puget Sound region, and on behalf of the million or so Washingtonians who don't live here, I would like to iterate the following: Washington is not Seattle. Repeat that a few hundred times, lest you forget.

See, Washington has this thing that you probably haven't heard of in Wisconsin or Ontario. It's called geography, and it means that not everywhere is like Bellevue. I know this is a difficult concept. I know you can go to Milwaulkee and knwo exactly what all of Wisconsin looks like, and that a photo of the Toronto outskirts is pretty much representative of all of Ontario. But that doesn't work here.

You are absolutely right that the people of the Puget Sound region are wimps when it comes to snow. More importantly, they're idiots. There are usually three days worth of snow here per year, if that. The drivers don't know how to drive in it, because they get no practice. The cities don't know how to deal with it, because they get no practice (and because they can't justify buying plows and sanding trucks when they sit in a garage 362 days per year). And the aforementioned hills just gum everything up when it gets icy.

But do not assume that this is all of Washington. Go over to Spokane some winter, and you'll see every bit the attitude about snow as you see in the Midwest, and the people handle it even better. Why? Because even Eastern Washington has geography.
