The Cafe on the Corner (one-shot)

Feb 13, 2010 20:29

The small cafe on the corner was never going to be famous, but it was wonderful. Day in and day out it would produce smiles on it's customer's faces that would last for days. It was old, and it followed it's own unique trend to stay true to it's roots. The cafe seemed to now exactly what it was, and had no plans to change it, unlike the surrounding businesses. One felt at home when they walked through the doors and heard the soft bell chime, alerting the people inside of that more were on the way. It's dust windowsills and decaying curtains only added to the undeniable charm of it's atmosphere. People loved it, and it loved it's people.

This beauty couldn't be preserved forever.

KAT-TUN stared silently at the pile of rubble before them, the air still smelt of charred tables and menus. Light shone off bits of broken glass that were nestled into the old walls, dirty with powdered cement. Not one of them could say a word, afraid to break the peaceful lull that had settled after the chaos. The whole thing seemed to be a surreal nightmare, leaving them to reflect on what was now lost.

Kamenashi Kazuya and Akanishi Jin's Memory:

A  teen settled into a booth, he had come to this cafe as long as he could remember. It always provided a sense of comfort his home could never give him, like today. He listened to the slosh his drenched clothes made against the booth seats, he had ran in the rain.

Kame's father was a cruel man.

The teen looked down at his long sleeves, underneath were bruises and scars. He blamed himself for everyone of them, constantly berating himself for being so weak and stupid. How could he believe his father would change after 8 years of the same thing? The same beatings, the same curses, hell, the same scarring. This was the first time he had ever tried to leave,  he had stopped believing that time would give him his father back. That alcohol would just dissipate along with all of the sorrows that had filled his home.

But what good was believing? It just left him with broken dreams and lies. That same useless promise of, 'This time I'll quit.' It was never the 'time' there probably never would be.

Sure, he had gotten away from it all for now. But, where would he go? He had no friends, his father said he didn't deserve them, he didn't have family to turn to, they would just send him back. Where do you go when you have absolutely nothing? He looked down, realizing the answer.

He didn't have any other choice but to die. The streets would eventually kill him anyway.

Slowly he grabbed a steak knife out of his rolled napkin, staring at it. He got up and headed outside of the cafe, watching as rain poured down the steel blade. His tears seemed to reflect back at him mockingly, he felt so weak. The blade guided his hand up, all thoughts clear of his mind.

So this was it.

His hands sped up, darting towards his open neck.

Until.

His eyes met those of another, they were plain brown. Yet, they were caring, and worried. It was as if they were trying to read his thoughts, it was now that he noticed he no longer had the knife. It was in the hands of the owner of the eyes, it held the blade as far away as possible.

And Kame broke down crying, taking comfort in unfamiliar arms that wrapped him up in so much warmth. Warmth he had never felt before, that gave him his first real promise.

"I'm not letting go."

Ueda Tatsuya and Taguchi Junnosuke's Memory:

His glare was cold, but unnoticed. All the couples around him in the cafe were smiling, laughing, and completely engaged in their own little worlds. He hated having to watch them be so content and in love.

His date was over 3 hours late.

The look on his face faded from anger, to being absolutely blank. He knew she would never come, it was ridiculous to think so. She was one of the most beautiful women at his university, and could have anyone she wished. Sighing, he had known she had said yes only because she knew he liked her. The girl had never made a point of speaking to him before hand, or saying 'Hello' to him before their classes.

She never even remembered his name.

It shouldn't hurt so much if he already knew, but why did his heart still ache? He was in a cafe filled with love, his favorite cafe in the city, yet. The place felt suffocatingly empty, he was alone again on Valentine's Day. Left alone to nurse his broken heart back to a former image of it's self. This clearly wasn't the place to do it. He gathered his things and prepared to leave when he was greeted quietly.

"Um, Hi." The voice was soft, yet soothing. Tatsuya stared up at his greeter, and mumbled softly.

"Hey." They both sat silently for a moment before the other teen spoke.

"I'm sorry to bug you, it's just..." The speaker could feel how intently the pair of eyes were watching him. "I was supposed to meet someone here and-" Tatsuya sighed, interrupting the other, but he didn't care.

"Never showed up did they?" His voice was bitter, and he noted how the other nodded his head solemnly. "Join the club." It grew silent again, well at least to them. The rest of the cafe was still a buzz with couples laughing and enjoying themselves.

And then something magical happened.

He felt warmth on his lips, it spread through his body and warmed his heart. His eyes were wide open in astonishment, staring in to the other's. But, it wasn't a glare, or a disgusted expression, it was peaceful. It was the most wonderful feeling he could think of.

Love.

It was proven by the simple kiss he was given, and the reassuring words he heard.

"I want to share this day with you."

Nakamaru Yuichi and Tanaka Koki's Memory:

The teen ducked into the cafe, narrowly avoiding his attackers by hiding behind a booth. He sighed, each day it had been the same thing, name calling and fights. Though he never tried to do anything, he was the source of daily torture from classmates. They all mocked him for his "large nose" and hair, taunting him and mouthing words of hate during his class. This cafe was his only escape, and peace from the cruel outside world.

"Oi...What happened to you?" He turned around to see that he had ducked into an occupied table. Though, the only occupant was another teen with somewhat longish brown and blonde hair. He sat down silently and looked out the window, watching as some of his attackers flipped him off when they saw him. The teen's head hung low as he stared at the floor.

"You wouldn't understand." He was curt, but he knew it was true. No one ever did. Yet, he was surprised to hear the next few words.

"Try me."

Yuichi stared in surprise as the other quickly paid for his meal and pulled him to a more private part of the cafe. Their conversation started off rockily, but by the end Yuichi was in tears telling the other everything. About all of his pain, and his sadness, and how he planned to kill himself in the cafe's bathroom the next day. He told of how he had set up a hangman's noose that would tighten when someone opened the bathroom door. Finally, he told him of how lonely he was. And how tired he was of people always picking on him and trying to make his life hell.

And the other listened, he listened to the whole thing.

Yuichi felt something warm enclose his hand, and he looked down to see it was the other's hand.

"Please don't let go."

So they all watched the cold robotic machines move the pieces of the broken cafe, holding on to their memories. They had found renewed life in that old cafe, and they had found.

Love.
