More drabbles for the
charloft 100 Drabbles of Summer. Some of these are kind of a little less than happy. *sigh* They're all around PG-ish
Prompt 8: hazard (Gen)
Easy Duty
“How’s it going, Jack?” Arnie Hitchens swooped in. Another two-star, Hitchens was the driving force behind this bimonthly booze’n’schmooze nightmare that Jack endured only at Major Davis’ insistence that it was a political necessity.
Jack gave a noncommittal answer, his mind replaying the text he had just received.
“Oh come on. It can’t be that bad. Only hazards we have to face are on the golf course.” Hitchens roared at his own humor. Jack forced a genial grin and began the obligatory discussion of the banal perils of golf as he counted the minutes.
SG1 missed second check-in. Prepping SAR.
Prompt 9: basket (Gen)
Winners and Losers
Daniel sank the winning basket to the sounds of Cam's disappointed groan and Vala's victory whoop. She immediately began skipping toward the park’s ice cream stand. "Losers buy!" she shouted over her shoulder.
"Oh man, you know she's going to want one of everything," Cam grumbled as he grabbed his wallet and ran after her.
Daniel and Teal'c headed across the park at a more leisurely pace. “Would’ve thought you could’ve blocked me,” Daniel commented.
Teal’c inclined his head half a degree, his eyes fixed on Vala bouncing on her toes as she examined the menu.
“Indeed, I could not.”
Prompt 10: strawberry (Gen)
Scents
The instant Landry left the room, Daniel turned and hissed at Vala, "What the hell was that about?"
"What?" Her aura of wounded innocence almost caused doubt, before he reminded himself that this was Vala he was talking to.
"Licking your lips, coy little grins... Not only are 'we' never going to happen,” he snapped, “It was completely inappropriate during a briefing!"
She leaned close and smiled. "Get over yourself, Daniel. I just purchased a new flavored lip gloss." She pressed her lips firmly against his cheek. “Yum.”
The scent of strawberry followed him for the rest of the day.
Prompt 11: ocean (Gen)
The Ninth Life
Daniel sat alone on the beach. Nearly twenty years here, and he still found it as alien as the day they had been stranded.
They’d lost Teal’c first; he'd destroyed his symbiote before it reached full maturity. An infection took Sam a few years back. And Jack... Jack had gone this morning.
But not lucky Daniel, he of the nine lives. He stared out at the roiling water, wondering how far he could push before that luck would finally break.
The setting sun blinded him momentarily. Daniel blinked and brushed the sand off his hands, before standing and heading home.
Prompt 12: climb (Jack/Daniel, ep tag for Menace)
In Silence
Daniel climbed the ladder unsteadily. As expected, Jack was sitting in his chair, balancing a beer on his knee and staring at the night sky.
Jack looked over when Daniel stepped onto the platform. His eyes touched on Daniel’s bandaged wrist. "That okay?"
Daniel shrugged.
Jack took a sip of his beer. "We okay?"
"Not so much." Daniel slid down till he was seated, leaning tiredly back against the low railing. They sat in silence, while Jack finished his beer. Then he stood and stepped carefully over Daniel's legs to descend the ladder.
“Not so much at all,” Daniel whispered.
Prompt 13: sibling (Gen, ep tag for Heroes)
In Need
Sam could hear the irritation already present in Mark’s voice when he answered the phone. She took a deep breath to steady herself before saying, “Hi.”
"Let me guess, you’re not going to make it this weekend.”
She sagged against the counter. “I can’t.” She winced at the tremor in her voice.
There was a pause. “Sammy? What’s wrong?”
A small sob broke through her tightly controlled composure.. “We... I lost someone. A friend.”
“I can be there by tonight.”
She started to refuse his offer, but surprised herself by saying, “Thanks.”
“What are brothers for? I love you, Sammy.”
prompt 14: island (Gen)
Mission Casualties
Jack looked suspiciously at Daniel's kitchen, noting the open refrigerator and the haphazard pile of food heaped on the island counter.
"Daniel?"
"Down here."
Jack rounded the counter to find Daniel scrubbing the bottom of the refrigerator. He looked up at Jack and shook his head.
"I am giving up fresh food. One unexpected delay, and I come home to a drawer full of vegetable soup."
"Not soup when we left?"
"No, it was pretty much in vegetable form before." Daniel answered, sitting back and rolling his shoulders.
"Ah.” Jack nodded. “Well the important thing is, did the beer survive?"
