Random Scene

So this is not part of the book I'm working on, just a scene from another story that I've been toying with for a while but is on the back burner until I'm done with the book because darn it I'm going to finish a whole book! Lol, anyways, just wanted to share this scene, get some thoughts on it. It involves, although not explicitly, mentions of sexual molestation, which thankfully is not a form of abuse I'm personally familiar with so while I like the scene I don't know how well I've captured the actual emotions of someone in that situation.

Anyways, the scene is below the cut and as I've said contains nothing explicit at all, for some background the main character is on the phone and the one who overhears her conversation is a boy her age who is becoming a friend but who she's not close to because she just met him this summer and he chooses to cultivate a sort of bad boy reputation. There isn't necessarily any romantic connection between them either currently or future in the story, more of a respectful friendship. Hopefully that makes sense :-S

Hearing her raised voice he realized she was on the phone and her tone combined with the tense line of her shoulders indicated it wasn’t a conversation he should be interrupting, or even overhearing. He was backing away when the next words out of her mouth stopped him cold.

“And did you ask him why I broke his wrist mom?” There was a pause and her voice tightened on the next words. “Of course not, well it might have been an important detail given that he had his hand down my pants when I did it!”

A soft sound he couldn’t stop escaped from his throat; she was too intent to notice.

“No Mom, I didn’t think you would believe me.” Her shoulders visibly slumped and the anger in her voice was replaced with resigned exhaustion. “You didn’t believe me with Phil when I was nine or Max when I was thirteen, why would you believe me now?”

The resulting tirade was so loud even he could distinguish all the words. It went on for a minute or two before she pulled the phone from her ear, staring at the small white headpiece for a moment before gently setting it in the cradle.

There was a moment of silence and he was working up the courage to speak when she turned, her lips parting in surprise as she saw him. Their eyes met; her’s questioning, his acknowledging. Her lips curved into a faint sad smile before widening into something real if harder then she had let him see before. Her eyes were colder than he was used to, wilder.

“Just the person I wanted to see.” was all she said; her voice calm but edged with something sharp enough to cut flesh if not bone.

“Shall we?” was his response as he held out his arm, for once knowing that what he had to offer was exactly what she needed.
