Rants, Essay One.

This is indeed a rant - and a celebrity one. I'm going to post it under a cut for anyone who doesn't want to read about it on their flist, or just isn't interested in the subject.  I'll also try to be eloquent as opposed to stooping to cussing, but it may involve some of that, as anyone who knows me knows I have a mouth like a truck driver.

Okay, so in all actuality, this is more about how people treat celebrities.  No - I don't mean the general "They're people too, we should respect their privacy" thing, although to a certain extent I feel that we should.  I'm on the fence on that particular issue - and I won't go into that at this time.
Here's the situation: Last night, I was surfing YouTube, and came across some P!nk videos - specifically, the Aerosmith tribute show where she did a performance of Janie's Got a Gun.  Isn't that a great song?  I love it. And she's such a rocker chick at heart, I felt like though she wasn't Steven Tyler, she nailed it.  It's a hard song to sing - especially when he hits the higher notes in the middle of a word.  But she sang her heart out, and to me, though Shakira was the popular female act of the night, I felt like P!nk's performance was infinitely better - mainly because she has that kind of voice, suited for rock 'n' roll! Shakira is good at her own thing - it's kind of a cross between pop and rock, and I've seen her cover AC/DC, and though it was alright, it's not her - same with Aerosmith, although it was better than Back In Black. This is not my point, I'm not doing a review, so I'll get to the crux of the matter. I always read through the comments - and though there were some wonderfully supportive comments, there were some negative ones as well.  There will always be naysayers, I think that some people thrive off of negativity in general. This pisses me off. I'm not going to quote directly except in one instance.  There was a lot of, "She's okay, but she ain't Aerosmith", and a lot more "She sucked, she can't replace Aerosmith", and then the one really nasty comment - "Man, she was a tugboat back then". First off - to the "not Aerosmith/not gonna replace Steven Tyler" crowd - IT WAS A TRIBUTE SHOW. What exactly don't you understand about that? There will always be singers and bands covering their favorite songs, I don't always like them, some make my ears hurt.  You don't have to listen!  But the goal wasn't to replace Aerosmith, and clearly the band enjoyed her performance.  Steven Tyler likes P!nk so much he collaborated with her on one of her albums. Now here's where I get really pissed: She was a tugboat? Come on! She looked great, but she's not a model!  She's not built like a model, she doesn't portray herself like a model - she's a healthy woman! I could see the muscle on her - it was just bulky muscle.  Some of us are not 2 inches around, and you know what?  That's okay!  There's absolutely nothing wrong with that - if we were all the same, how boring would this world be! I have seen these kinds of comments all over the place, and it makes me furious.  I've seen people write that she's manly looking, that they couldn't figure out who would be the husband in her relationship, that she's too muscled, and oh, so much more.  She looks amazing - are they just jealous?  I am built the same way, and I'm sure there are thousands of girls just like me who are glad that there's someone out there not striving for superskinny. It's not healthy to only eat a slice of apple a day! Or a half a cup of cottage cheese.  You can look at her face and tell she's not fat.  What is the point of being so negative?  It's only going to drag you down. A weaker person would see those kinds of comments and start starving themselves, and thank Goddess she's so strong minded, that she can deal with that negativity and go on being herself.
I guess I started listening to her because I was looking for the kind of classic rock voice in a modern band/singer.  I started becoming a huge fan when I realized that though she's not the "model ideal", she's such a strong woman and knows her own mind, she can be a celebrity and still be true to herself.  I suspect that the reason she is so popular is that we've needed this kind of image and personality in the haze of malnourished celebrities there are today.
I don't think I wrap up essays well - this may be re-written at some point for further clarity.  But that's all I think I wanted to say on this subject.
