At least a thousand grackles blanketed our yard and the neighbors over a week ago. I put the dog in the yard and she just huddled up to the door. After less than a half hour, they disappeared. This morning I saw them all over our back yard again and their stay was just as brief. Perhaps it is a migratory flock hanging around to enjoy our unseasonably warm weather, but they are a contentious and noisy lot.
Speaking of grackles, I put up most of my junk jewelry for sale at our garage sale this past weekend. Customers clutched and crabbed at it, even bought some, but not nearly as much as I'd liked. Very shiny stuff, too. I suppose I should take it to a vintage dealer and just sell it for a few bucks to get rid of it.
We also sold an antique wheel chair and many vintage tables. And while we sold a lot of stuff, there was a lot that we did not sell and simply hauled away to junk or donate. Do not believe the myth that you should hold onto stuff because "it will be worth something someday." Those people who make out big time at Antique Roadshow are holding one family heirloom, not a garage, basement, and seven closets worth of crap. We made a few hundred bucks, which wasn't really much compensation for all the time and hassle and involved.
Still, I am happy to have some cash in my hand and space in the garage. For the first time in over 8 years, both cars were parked inside last night. I think it has been four or five years since my car was inside over the winter. So lots of progress made, but always more to go.
