...thanks lizzie.

Anyway.

RAGTIME is one of my ultimate top favorite books and musicals. It is an amazing, beautiful, heart inspiring story full of music that matches. RAGTIME, which takes place in 1906, in locations in and around New Rochelle, New York. There are many themes and stories within that I could speak of. It tells of the relationships between the cultures of the white people, the black people, and the immigrants that were discovering American during that time. Within those larger stories, you learn about a white, upper-middle class family, and young black man that wants better for his people and his "girlfriend", and it tells the story of tateh, and immigrant from Latvia and his young daughter. I won't get into details, but over the course of several years, many changes occur within America, and more definitely, within these three groups of people. Interestingly enough, by the end of the story, all three groups are so connected, the three stories become one.

IF you've never read the book, by E.L. Doctorow, or listen to the soundtrack, I would definitely suggest you do so...soon. It will bring a tear to your eye and remind you of the ever changing atmosphere of our country and it's people. Maybe if more people see where we've been, they would be more willing to somewhere new.

The reason I bring this up is because of a particular song that is in the musical. Although I've been listening to this music for a few years now, I listened to BACK TO BEFORE again today and it touched me in a different way than usual and made me think about me and where I have been and where I am going. Below I have posted a video from Youtube of Marin Mazzie, who was the original "Mother" in the OBC of RAGTIME, singing this song at a concert. Besides the fact that she is an amazing performer, you can kind of get a glimpse of the song and it's singular power.

I have found myself making the particular comment of something like, "I could only go back" or "If I had only known" or something of the sort...you know exactly what I mean...you've made the comment yourself. Well, I can't go back and neither can you. I can only start from here...move forward. I have met people who try dearly to make his or her life the way it use to be. When it's not, it gets quite depressing. My point is that I am trying very hard to stop letting past situations effect me now. Life isn't what it use to be, it's what it is now and what it will be. What happened yesterday, or last year, or ten years ago, or even 20 years ago...it's in the past. It does not matter anymore. All that counts is now...as long as you remember that you can't go back to before...

Kind of a dumb post, but I wanted to write it. Keep a song in your heart and a dance in your step! Austin
