I hate social interactions. I completely and utterly hate them. I can never get them right. They make me a wreck, anticipating them, trying to think of what I should say, how to say it, how to stand, or sit, how to hold my hands, what to wear. And even the little things. Do you smile big, or middle, or little, or laugh, laugh louder? longer ( Read more... )

Apologies go a long way? I've seen you say some crazy things sometimes, but I don't think that anyone ever thinks that you're being malicious in saying them. You're not saying it so that the person feels awful-- you're saying it because you think that the person needs to change something or you're saying it to justify something that you do differently. I think that's a big difference-- because you're clearly attacking the thing that they do and not the whole person. I think that in general people understand that.

And, while every interaction counts, it's the sum of all interactions that is your opinion of a person. One bad interaction becomes diluted over time. Cheer up, it'll be ok.

Aww, you guys are so sweet. Thanks for all the kind replies. Clearly, I said something stupid to somebody, completely mis-predicting the reaction I'd get and it went all to hell. Honestly, I think I was more upset than she was! But still it's an issue that I have that bugs me more than all my other issues combined, and considering the size of my body-image issues, that's saying something. And it pisses me off to no end that it's something I just don't think there's a way to fix, so I'm stuck with it. Sigh. But you all make good points, and I'll chant them like a mantra inside my head during all future social interactions.

You know, I had body image issues until two weeks ago when I accidentally bought pants that are too big for me. Now when I'm hiking up my pants all of the time I feel extra skinny. Voila! I recommend big pants.
