Back to work

The holiday's over, and I've been back at work for two days now.  It almost seems as if the break never happened!

Yesterday morning I went for my walk (I'd even had a holiday from that while I was off!).  While I was walking I suddenly saw a fluttering shadow on the footpath over the shadow of my head.  Next thing, I felt sharp little claws scrabble on my scalp!  It was a willy wagtail!  I'm not sure if it was defending it's nest, gathering hair for the lining of a nest, or perhaps it was just in a bad mood!  I had resolved to keep a look-out this morning when I was on that part of my route, but when I woke up this morning, it had been raining and was threatening more.  I didn't go for my walk.

The weather has suddenly turned cold.  This time last week it was 38C.  Today it only made it to 19C.   We have a cyclone in the north-west which has just crossed the coast.  It's not a high-category cyclone (a good thing!).  However, there's a large front coming up from the south, and the worry is that when the two systems meet, it will create a "super storm".   http://www.news.com.au/perthnow/story/0,21598,21001413-2761,00.html  The threatened area is not expected to reach where I live, but the central part of Western Australia has been issued an extreme weather alert (as in the need to tie down caravans, make sure nothing is left loose in yards, etc).  If it happens, it'll be sometime tomorrow.  My fingers are crossed that it won't happen at all.

Not long ago I posted some pictures of my blue hibiscus in various stages from bud through to dying.

I've always been fascinated by this plant, as no two flowers are the same.  Generally, flowers on the same plant have the same characteristics, and apart from small variations, all look the same.

This isn't the case with this blue hibiscus.  All of these pictures were taken on the same day, on the same shrub (I only have one).

This flower has just two or three very tiny inner petals.  The outer petals are rounded, with just a couple of curves on the edges.
This flower looks very delicate.  The petals are almost transparent.

The outer petals are almost "frilly" around the edges.  The inner petals are fine and feathery.
This is a real "double" bloom.  It has a layer of large petals with a couple of curved edges, followed by a layer of slightly smaller petals.  Finally, there are the fine, feathery petals in the middle.
