All Tuckered Out And Weezy (2 Videos Plus 12 Big Photos)

When Laurie and I took in our Big Dog, Tucker, a few days past a year ago, he was pretty wild and undisciplined. Among other things, he loved to run around campus and the woods nearby, and while he would always come home...eventually...you couldn't exactly rely on him coming when you called. He's gotten much more disciplined thanks to our efforts--"our" meaning mostly Laurie's. But we've always regretted that our yard wasn't much bigger and fenced in, preventing him from running around when he wasn't inside.

The Little Dog, Weezy, on the other hand, is all about Laurie and even when she would get free, she'd always come back when called--sometimes after a moment or so, but always.

So for some time now Laurie had been contemplating whether or not Tucker was trustworthy enough to be taken back somewhere deep in the woods and let loose to run around while she or we went hiking. It just so happens we have a few hundred acres' worth on the back end of campus, so that was where she decided to try her experiment...and it succeeded. Tucker seems to have figured out very quickly that if he behaves, he'll get more days like this: he ran around like a kid in a toy store after being told he could have anything he wanted, and when he was done he came back and chilled out the rest of the day. Weezy went too and of course stayed close by, and was quite pleased with herself afterwards.

I wasn't there for that trip, but I was for the second, this past Friday morning. I couldn't get pictures of either of the dogs while running around--both are fast and their brown-black coloring gives them perfect forest camouflage. But I did shoot a couple of videos of Tucker's first few moments of play, and photographs when he was back on his lead about half-an-hour later.

It doesn't take Tucker long to realize he's about to be set free!

We thought for quite awhile that Tucker had a stick.
Oh, no no no. He'd found a deer leg.
A few minutes later, though, he actually buried it,
and covered the burial spot with snout-pushed leaves.

One stretch of several miles' worth of campus trails.

With Tucker re-leashed, we head in the general direction of home.

After a day like this, Tucker thinks the sun shines on him.

I'm thinking about making this my LJ profile page picture.

The pond where we took mauzybroadway last weekend,
only the opposite side.

A view of the dock featured in last weekend's photos.

Saying hello to some of the neighbors.

Laurie may be ready for a nap, but Tucker isn't there yet.

A swim and a drink in the campus lake make for a happy dog.

Weezy likes Tucker's idea!

Hopefully we'll get to do this again soon.
