So after watching Requiem again, I think I need to redefine Houran's characterisation.

I'm not fond of doing damsels in distress. I am a right rollicking feminist, and if my female OCs show weakness, it is only when someone close to them is injured. (Take, for instance, Kamiza Maki. She's eating herself up after Dyna's death because she promised him she would become strong...and she could not defend him nor her family. Sound like Kouryuu? Yeah, I realised that. Sorry.) But Houran, she--well, you could tell how _shaken_ she was when Dougan!Hakkai stabbed Gojyo--by the end of the scene she was wailing her heart out. She didn't even know him that well! The term nakitaoreru (nakikuzureru?)in the fanbook suited that scene very well indeed. ^^;

I guess now I'll have to put more weightage upon the fact that as much as I don't like writing that type of character, Houran is very much an old-fashioned type of gal, a little insecure on the side, not very stable emotionally and mentally. Considering what she went through, should I be surprised? I can't make her as strong as I'd like to, but hey--she changed by the end of the movie (see the determination in those eyes as she fights that evil wind!), and perhaps I won't have to make her as weak as canon determined her at the very first. Perhaps I can build upon the strength she showed if for a brief and desperate moment.

On a local note--Firn cooked up one swell idea for a Kanan pic. Let's just say it involves closets, wedding dresses and youkais. :)

characterisation, houran, contemplation, fangirlism, requiem, fanfic
