I've been reading
The 12-Year Reich: A Social History of Nazi Germany 1933-1945. It's an amazing look at what life was really like in Germany in the years leading up to World War II. What's most interesting is not how evil the Nazis were, but how much good the National Socialist movement actually did for the German economy and the standard of living of working-class people.
It's a shame that progressive socialism always seems to be coupled with brutal totalitarianism. If there was ever a chance to demonstrate that social consciousness can hold a nation together without the need for totalitarian rule, it seems that Nazi Germany was it. I wonder what would have happened if the good aspects of Nazi socialism hadn't been so tightly bound with the evil ones. Perhaps they would have achieved utopia.
Incidentally, I of course believe that I could handle the responsibilities of dictatorship without letting my power go to my head.
