Me, with my esoteric sense of dryness, would most likely call the feline Bast--regardless of the animal's sex.

Aaaah - cool. Any particular reason for the fondness? I think most people have a soft spot for some kind of mythological animal - I love dragons and werewolves, but I used to adore chimaeras.

Neil Gaiman's Sandman series. And also the novel American Gods. Bast was awesome. I think Neil has a particular fondness for Bast. XD

The cat is not at all my favorite creature, but I do enjoy Gaiman's characterization of Bast.
