First day at the new job went well.
I like the woman I'll be sharing space and working most closely with with, and that's huge for quality of life. She's quietish and not nosy, but friendly and a little snarky when we do talk. Not super tech savvy, but clearly good at her job and into really training and showing me everything. I think that will be a good relationship.
The other three women in the morning staff meeting seemed pretty cool. Too early to really say, but I think it's a good team. The office seems slow, but productive and pretty well-run.
I was not wrong about the organizational turmoil, or the sense that it could mean lots of opportunities for me. The school is switching to a new budget model and getting a full HR reorganization, and hoping to redefine and add a couple of full time admin positions. No guarantees, but that's promising. If nothing else I'm going to learn the systems and the culture and meet a lot of people.
Mostly it was a first day. Did HR paperwork. Entered my information into computer systems. Figured out the caffeine situation. (No in-office coffee, but tea-quality hot water on tap and a Seattle's Best downstairs. I will manage.) Got an ID. Learned some names. Did some filing while waiting for the computer access I need to start my real work.
I'll know more as it goes along, but the initial feeling is positive. Maybe not the forever job, or even the next-three-years job. But also maybe that. We'll see how I feel about it as end-august approaches, but I'm confident this was the right move. And it felt good to have work.
