Starting next Monday, I will officially work full time at
the place I've been working part time. The woman I was covering for decided not to come back to the same position, so it looks like I get to keep it.
I got the verbal offer last week, but I didn't want to get too excited until I had the paperwork in front of me. Now I do, and I'm quite pleased. I feel a little silly being this excited to start a new job while sitting at my desk at that same job (the woman in HR had a good laugh at the 'first day' language on the form letter) but it's a good change.
Money and stability are the obvious differences, but I'm enjoying some of the littler ones, too. Don't get me wrong: the difference between a full-time and part-time paycheck is not to be under-estimated, nor will I miss the uncertainty of wondering where I'll be in a few months. But I'm also pretty excited about getting to settle in and take on a little bit more responsibility. Already I'm interacting with clients myself instead of shuttling their emails to my supervisor. I'll get to be part of long-term projects and planning instead of just providing day-to-day support.
The first year after college I temped, so I've been a lot of places I knew I wasn't going to stay. This is the first time I've made the switch from temp to perm at the same place (though not the first time it's been offered). I've started noticing all the little ways a job is different when it's not a temp gig. It's like the difference between a hotel room and a summer apartment, between a dorm room and a home.
So far:
- I installed Firefox this morning and set up all the add-ons for google.
- I'm finally make an effort to learn people's names and be friendly, which is exciting. It's an office full of interesting-seeming people, but it never seems worth it when you're leaving soon.
- I'm making a list of things to bring in:
- - a real coffee mug
- - some soy creamer
- - an umbrella
- - a picture of Tyler
- - the spare ipod charger
- - Help me out: What else?
