I awoke to Madison's John MacDonald DJing WLS hits from the year 1962. Spectacular.
I like the years 1963 and 1969, maybe 1967, rock and roll. 1963 has all this diversity, from country, to soul, to folk, to early ska - setting up for the Beatles. But it sounds like 1962 has all this amazing energy, and this lustful clash of old-time, 1950's rock and roll and stuff with the new colloquial 1960's feel - stuff that would keep pushing on alongside the Beatles later, while the old time stuff pretty much disappeared.
John MacDonald is this enthusiastic, high-voiced guy who has a Saturday R&R show on WORT since the beginning of time, and apparently he was in HS in 1962, listening to these songs on the radio. This guy is an icon, and he has really made old R&R exciting and lovely to new listeners for decades, even now. I cannot
link you to his show, since it hasn't hit the WORT website, yet. But, I can set you up for it!

WLS has been a talk radio station for many decades, but it was once the primary rock hits radio station of the midwest. This 1962 music was setting the world on fire, both inspiring the Beatles and setting America up for the British Invasion.
WLS 890 Chicago 2 May 1962 Part 2People in Jamaica were listening to their transistor radios, which distorted the sound of the music, and so the R&B that they heard sounded more like ska. And they went on to create ska and reggae! And so this song, for example, got converted into into ska/reggae, which would later be covered by
UB40...
