The National was great! Unexpectedly greater than we thought!
The venue for this concert is a mid-size venue for your standard midlist bands who are too big for clubs but not big enough for arenas. I saw Death Cab there last year, upcoming artistes include Lyle Lovett, Coheed & Cambria, Disturbed, you get the idea. It's an indoor/outdoor venue with a smaller space inside but your standard setup outside...stage, then standing-room pit area, then raised area of box seats, then sloped lawn. It's actually a pretty nice venue. I met Dayna nearby so we could get some dinner then walk to the venue. She looked pissed. She was in charge of getting the tickets, so I hoped nothing untoward had occurred.
It had. "The show is inside!" she said.
Inside? Why would the venue move the show inside on a beautiful August evening? Inside sucks. It's smaller, you have to stand the whole time, even during the opening act, because there's no lawn to sit on, it'll be hot and smelly and sticky and unpleasant. We were not pleased.
So we went and got sushi and commiserated about how both of our days kinda sucked. We were disappointed in our crispy tofu, too. Oh, our first world problems, let me show you them.
We walked to the venue but as we passed by I saw people sitting outside. The show is outside after all! Yay! We were much cheered by this.
We got into the venue and I went to the bathroom. When I came out, Dayna told me to put in my email address for Decibel Club and spin their prize wheel, which could conceivably get us box seats. I did, and spun, and won...free earbuds. No boxed seats. But hey, earbuds. When Dayna came out of the bathroom I told her we hadn't won. We went over to the t-shirt booth, but as we were walking away, some guy from the Decibel Club just ran up and handed Dayna two tickets. "You guys want these?"
They were box seats. Yeah, no idea. But yay, box seats! This means we get to sit on chairs and we'll be able to see over the heads of everybody in the pit and waitresses would bring us beer if we wanted any! We ended up sharing a four-top table with two dudes who'd also won box seats in the raffle. They were pleasant enough. One of them looked just like Seth Rogen.
The show was great. The nice thing about liking indie rock is that typically the bands aren't over-produced, so they tend to sound live just like they sound on their albums, and The National was no exception. They sounded awesome, it was a gorgeous night, all was right with the world.
And oh my, there were about a million cute hipster guys wandering around.
