Etiquette poll

So today's lunchtime reading was Etiquette Hell, a site I always enjoy. As I read about the misbehavior of innumerable brides, bridemaids, and relatives, I'm struck by something.
Apparently there are a lot of people in the world who are under the impression that the value of a wedding gift is supposed to cover the cost of the guests' meal and their proportionate share of the reception costs.
I have never heard this belief voiced from anyone in the real world, nor from any of my many friends who've gotten married. If a lot of people think this, then I've been personally grievously negligent in my own wedding-gifting. I gave my friend Catherine a hardcover copy of "The Joy of Cooking" for her wedding, which was gorgeous and I'm sure the cost of the book MIGHT have covered one of the rolls I had with dinner.
