Detectives for fun and profit

I'm considering starting to read a series of mystery novels.  One of the ones with a continuing main character.  I'm just not sure which one.  Any input or suggestions would be appreciated.  I especially want ones that are well-written and won't make my inner red-pen editor go into cardiac arrest, like the J.D. Robb books did ( Read more... )

Hi Lori!

Mmm. I think I'd go for either the Jonathan Gash Lovejoy series or the Kathy Reichs' one. Both professions sound awesome.

By the way, is the Kathy Reichs' series the inspiration for the TV show Bones? The name Temperance Brennan sounds familiar.

Go with Wimsey. There is nothing better.

Have you ever read Janet Evanovich's Stephaine Plum series?

I second Stephanie Plum. They're thrilling, and hallarious.

I third Janet Evanovich. She's one of my favorite authors. And her books make me laugh out loud, even in public places!

Well, if you wanted series about supernaturals I could certainly point you in the right direction, but for what it's worth I read a Tempe Brennan book and hated it -- the novel character and TV character are like two different people, and I don't think Kathy Reichs is a particularly good author. Perhaps I just picked a bad book, but Tempe Brennan isn't a very likeable character at all.

The Early Patricia Conrwell books with Kay Scarpetta aren't that bad but honestly I have hated every single on of the books that have come out in about the last 5 years. I don't know what happened to her writing.

I like the Eve Duncan series by Iris Johansen. Eve is a forensic sculptor.

For a fun kind of book I would recommend James Patterson's Maximum Ride series. I loved the first book and the second one just came out but I haven't gotten it yet.
