Detectives for fun and profit

I'm considering starting to read a series of mystery novels.  One of the ones with a continuing main character.  I'm just not sure which one.  Any input or suggestions would be appreciated.  I especially want ones that are well-written and won't make my inner red-pen editor go into cardiac arrest, like the J.D. Robb books did.

Some early candidates...

1.  Jonathan Gash's Lovejoy books.  Lovejoy is an antiques dealer who solves mysteries.  That is made of awesome.

2.  The Lord Peter Wimsey books.  Just because.

3.  Kathy Reichs' Temperance Brennan books, because Brennan is a forensic anthropologist and that's what I wanted to be.

Gimme some more ideas.
