Awhile back, I was talking to a friend about music. He commented that all the music today is crap, that it's all vapid pop or crappy hip-hop. I was shocked, and I asked him what the heck radio stations he was listening to. Come to find out he's been listening to nothing but crappy Top 40 stations, no wonder he's despairing of the music scene.
I told him that the last five years have been a very exciting time for music. There's been so much expansion of genres and so much diversification that much of what would have gone unnoticed before is getting plenty of attention.
My friend doesn't have much time for music appreciation these days, he's got a business and a family. So I'm taking it upon myself to bring him up to speed. I'd like to make him a CD (possibly several) with representative songs from the best hip new bands of the last 2 or 3 years, and new things from older groups that have been strong recently. I need input! What groups should be included on my list? Here's the ones I have thought of so far:
Death Cab for Cutie
Franz Ferdinand
Green Day (bc of Amer Idiot)
The Shins
The White Stripes
The Vines
The Decemberists
Damien Rice
Jack Johnson
Postal Service
Coldplay
Keane
The New Pornographers
Manic Street Preachers
Evanescence
Dresden Dolls
The Killers
Radiohead
Sufjan Stevens
Maroon 5
OutKast
Kelly Clarkson (hey, ought to have some decent pop represented)
Good Charlotte
Linkin Park
Gorillaz
ETA:
Snow Patrol
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
The Strokes
Arcade Fire
Bloc Party
Kaiser Chiefs
Kings of Leon
Gimme some more ideas. Not too obscure...I'm trying to get a representative sample of the best recent music.
