Running out of straws

LiveJournal has rolled out a new feature in which users are notified by email if they log in from a place that they haven't previously logged in from before. This is an excellent idea if it works, since it alerts users to possible security breaches.

This morning I got two of these notifications, even though I was logging in from the usual computer, IP address, house, etc. I figured they were still shaking out bugs, so I didn't worry too much. Just a little while ago I tried again, logging out and deleting all relevant cookies and logging in again. Once more I got an email notification. All three of these reported the same IP address.

A horrible idea struck me, and I logged out without deleting any cookies, then logged in again. At first I didn't get a notification, making me think they did something utterly lamebrained like putting the IP address history in a cookie. But midway through writing this post I got a fourth notification.

If this keeps up, I won't be at all inclined to log into LJ.
