LJ archiving for non-Windows?

Things may be going downhill rapidly for LiveJournal, if this report is accurate. (I haven't seen confirmation anywhere else and don't know how reliable Daily Dot is.) Even if that doesn't affect its US functionality, it's clearly becoming less and less usable as its managers "improve" it in the face of massive user protests.

It's time to think seriously about getting our content to a safe place. The web-based applications for doing this require your handing them your password, which means that they have access to your private content and can do all kinds of nasty things to your account if they're so inclined. The only desktop archiving application I've been able to find is Windows-only.

I am considering writing a Java desktop application to archive LiveJournal. I've started looking at the API, and at least the basic saving of text entries doesn't look too bad. Embedded images will be trickier, and the Scrapbook may be beyond hope. Even saving text would be very important to many people. As a Java app it would run on most modern desktop systems.

This would be a significant time commitment for me, possibly a couple of weeks of full-time work. I don't have current income, but I am heavily involved in various projects to make myself marketable. This could be in that category too -- it is a digital preservation project -- but I'd want to do it only if there's really nothing that already serves its purpose and if there's significant interest.

I'm not sure there's even more than a handful of people still reading these words, but if you're reading this and you think it's a good idea, then let me know and let others who'd be interested know. If anyone would like to help with the app's creation, of course I'd like to know that too.
