Is it very wrong that I borrowed 'Star Trek' (2009) from LoveFilm, heartily enjoyed it, and am now thinking of buying the DVD? I can't help it. I've always found ST good fun and easy to watch, be it TOS, TNG, or even VOY (never liked DS9 much), and although this film has a high cheese content ('Who was that pointy eared bastard?') - in fact, possibly because it has a high cheese content - it was an excellent way to pass two hours. Chris Pine as Kirk (I once had a crush on the original Kirk, before I realised he was William Shatner) spends the whole film getting punched, strangled and knocked over the edge of high precipices, but totally channels Shatner for arrogance and smarm (and hell yes, good looks); Zachary Quinto is amazing as Spock, and as usual, Leonard Nimoy scores a cameo role (whatever happened to 'I am not Spock'?); Chekov is actually Russian; and I found Bones (Karl Urban) and Captain Pike (Bruce Greenwood) strangely .. uh .. compelling. Not sure about Winona Ryder, but then I never am. And what is Simon Pegg doing in there?
The plot is your average Star Trek alternate timeline/future self fodder, most likely so they could play around with the canon characters (Spock and Uhura? Did I miss something?), but I was gripped. And sci-fi is the only type of film where an excess of CGI is permissible, in my book.
Am I alone here? Is it just because I'm not a Trekkie, I just like to dip in and out of the repeats on various channels? Loved it!
Is scared. That's two posts in a row about things I like. I shall have to test my willpower by watching ... I don't know ... Mamma Mia or something.
