[✐ fan essay] the speed limit is your friend

Below is an observation I made a few months back, crossposted from backseatduelist 's journal.

One of my favorite little moments in the YGO manga comes in the volume where Marik fights using the Silent Doll: he arrives in a port about 80 km (roughly 50 miles) from Domino and gets on his ~motorcycle~ (which says "DEATH" on it in the manga). One of the Ghouls briefs him on the situation, gives him a Duel Disk, and tells him Domino's about an hour away. To which Marik offhandedly replies, as he swings onto his ~motorcycle~ (without putting on a helmet), "I'll get there in 40 minutes".

And if you check the timing that Takahashi gives every now and then? HE DOES. Takahashi documents that Marik arrives in Domino exactly 40 minutes after that conversation, having driven the ~motorcycle~, sans helmet, while playing a card game long-distance via the Silent Doll.

I got stupidly curious and did the math. 80 km away, taking an hour to get there, means of course that at the minimum the speed limit is 80 km/hr or 50 mi/hr on that road. Makes sense; it's a highway. But for Marik to arrive somewhere 80 km away in 40 minutes, he has to have driven at about 120 km/hr, or 74 mi/hr.

Seventy-four miles per hour. On a highway. Riding a ~motorcycle~. Without a helmet on. While only half-watching the road because he was also trying to hold a conversation with/win a card game against the man he believes to have ruined his own life, murdered his father, and enslaved his family for thousands of years.

MARIK ISHTAR, YOU ARE INSANE FOR MORE REASONS THAN THOSE NORMALLY DOCUMENTED.
