I'm not big on conforming, nor am I big on running with the herd over a cliff. I blame the lights, because it's most assuredly not the weather that is making me feel this way. To the very last, I will be an angry person at my core, like a demon with a chip on his shoulder. Something about the polarization of people in the christmas season makes me change though.
There are people out there who are so disgusted by the christmas holiday that they refuse to celebrate it, or they celebrate it without giving gifts. The commercialism of our society has created a counterculture that could overthrow Stalinist Russia in its sleep, people rave about how greedy America has gotten and at the same time, the droves of people filing into Best Buy and Wal-Mart are enough that apparently there is a risk of being trampled to death.
We have built an empire of gluttony on the backs of children in 3rd world countries who work for pennies a week and an army of illegal immigrants who are willing to work in unfit conditions just to live in the land of opportunity so that their kids can get an education.
All of this trouble and crap and I still can't wipe the smile from my face with the holiday season on the rise. People are coming together. The Republican NRA member can sit accross the table from the gay liberal democrat and they can carry out a polite conversation about what their kids are getting. There's no escaping the lights and the mood, the warm fire and the cinnomon double chai pumpkin lattes, the magic in the air is so thick I can taste it. Little purple-green sparks fly everywhere even though the rain is coming down in sheets.
I'm looking forward to the gift opening tomorrow but more than that I'm looking forward to sitting in my mom's house and eating a home made breakfast that I didn't make, or walking out in the garden and picking mandarins with dad and the dogs. Seeing my sister again before she goes back to the base and eventually back to Iraq for her third and final deployment. Finally, I look forward to the road trip I'm about to embark on with Melaine and Buddy which I'm sure is going to be a blast. New Years at Disneyland or in a Hotel is going to be a blast either way because I've got somebody to kiss at midnight and no, I'm not talking about the dog.
Step aside, Red... I've got Christmas cheer to spread!!!!
