Just thought I'd put up a bit of information I have on mourning crape (spelled specifically that way to indicate the mourning fabric) and bonnets. My sample is drapey and very textured (the texture is always on the bias and is depicted in fashion plates by thin diagonal hash marks). It feels a bit like organza ( Read more... )

This weekend I scored an antique crape mourning veil. It's 17" wide and has a 2" hem at the bottom. Seems kind of short...I always seem to be reading that veils were a yard long with a hem a foot wide! The longer the veil and the deeper the hem, the more respect was shown the dead. Last year while visiting friends I bought a book published in 1910 called Around the World With a Camera. There are photos from around the world depicting people and animals doing every day things as well as a special section for stars of the theatre.
