Hol(e)y continuity, batman!
- That is not how changelings work. :P
- So... sidhe dude has been planning this for twenty years, yet was entirely happy for Sophia to off Arthur in series 1? I like how they even got the same actor and the same prop back, yet failed to acknowledge, you know, the entire plot of that episode. Oh show.
- So... King Olaf's daughter is Lady Vivian, but Lord Godwin's daughter is Princess Elena? OH SHOW.
- Elena, though? Ahhh so adorable! I mean, ok, not so much with the frog thing, but I loved her messy hair and refusal to wear shoes and general failure at manners, and am kind of disappointed that that stuff was apparently all the sidhe's fault. Although she was still keen to kick Arthur's bum at pony races at the end, so that was nice at least.
-I also like how Godwin has what appears to be a Norman fortress* while Camelot is a 15th century château.
-If Morgana and Gwen weren't pod people this year, I would be objecting strenuously to the notion that Morgana has only just worked out that Gwen and Arthur are crushing on each other. It's ok, though, because the real Gwen and Morgana are still chilling at that druid camp having lots of sex. They are. Don't even try to tell me otherwise.
-Silly pixie woman, of course Merlin isn't going to tell Arthur you're a pixie, that would involve Merlin telling Arthur anything important ever. Obviously you got confused by the prop and guest star from series 1.
-Blah blah, Gwen and Arthur can never be, blah blah, sad looks, blah blah. I would be so much more inclined to root for them if we ever got to see them have conversations on subjects other than 'Arthur will be a great king' and 'We can never be'. Really, it's lucky they can't get married right now; once they do and Arthur's actually king, they won't have a single thing to talk about.
-Also, kind of disappointed that Gwen didn't even make a mildly disapproving face when Merlin was loaded down with all those bags and Arthur was giving him grief. Are there seriously no other servants in Camelot? We saw a random extra in servants' garb in another scene, why exactly couldn't she help with the luggage? Oh, right, because Merlin only has two settings, Butt Of Every Joke or Sooper Sekrit Hero, and we hadn't got to the latter bit yet.
-Did I mention I liked Elena? She was adorable. I kind of want an AU where she's just clumsy because she is, and she and Merlin bond over being klutzes. I do like the idea of her and Arthur being (entirely platonic) friends later in their lives, though. Elena can have a girlfriend then. ...Oh man. Elena and Vivian. They would be so fantastically odd-couple. Elena being all PONY RIDES and Vivian going BUT THERE'S MUD D: and then they make out. In front of Arthur. During a state visit. Merlin never, ever stops laughing.
-Speaking of Merlin laughing, I appreciated Merlin getting to giggle while Gaius was in an uncomfortable situation, for once.
-Also very much appreciated Arthur actually seriously asking Merlin for advice and then listening to him. Was a bit sadface that it apparently took up until ten minutes before the wedding for them to talk about this, but I guess Merlin was rather busy, and in my head I can pretend that Arthur was spending a lot of time making sad puppy faces waiting for Merlin to turn up for sleepovers conversation.
-Wasn't a fan of Arthur's sudden speculative look at Elena at the end when she was all lady-like, but I did appreciate that his primary argument against the marriage was "I don't love her" rather than "She's a mess and falls on her face a lot."
-Did I mention I liked Elena? I could've done with more Elena being adorable and less of Arthur pouting, but overall I feel like the fail was toward the lower end of the scale for this show, and Elena was adorable, so yay.
* ETA: Not actually a Norman fortress. Actually
Castell Coch, which is 19th century Welsh and touted as 'gothic revival'. Which is still not even remotely the same century as Pierrefonds, but admittedly in wrong direction. It was mainly the cylindrical towers, teeny-tiny windows, and gnome-cap type roofs on the towers that made me think Norman, though on further reflection those features really remind me more of some of the medieval castles in Latvian than the White Tower, etc. Whatever, no one but me cares this much about the castles.
