Sam was gripping unto the fabric of the back seat of the Impala as if his life depended on it, his eyes were shut but he didn’t need to look through the windows to know they were moving, really fast. He ran his tongue from one side to the other of his bottom lip in a vane effort to moisture it, his mouth was dry and his lips felt like sand paper.

“Are you ok, back there?” Bobby said.

Sam opened his eyes slowly as he felt as if his head was spinning quickly just to find Bobby’s concerned eyes staring back at him through the review mirror as he drove. He simply nodded, knowing that it didn’t matter what he said to convince him he was ok his voice would probably prove the opposite.

He wiped the sweat off his forehead with the outside of his hand and leaned his head back trying to avoid Ruby’s excruciating gaze. She was sitting right next to Sam and hadn’t taken her eyes off him since they had gotten inside the car after leaving Jim and Joanne on a bus stop several miles back.

“You have no idea of what you are doing” she whispered as she leaned towards him.

Sam simply turned towards her giving her a cold stare, not saying a single word; he wasn’t in the mood nor had the strength to get not an argument right now. His breathing was heavy and laboured even when he was making a great effort to make it stable causing his heartbeats to be slower and fewer.

“I think we should stop in a hospital first, seems you’ve got one hell of a fever, son” Bobby said from the front seat “There’s a hospital just-”
“No!” Sam struggled to get the word out.

Bobby’s eyes widened as he heard Sam’s husky and shaky voice.

“No stops” he said “take me to Dean”

Bobby’s concern didn’t decrease, but on the other hand how to say no? Sam and Dean’s deal was now close to reaching it’s deadline and it didn’t matter how much he hated to admit the boys chances weren’t looking too good, besides Sam’s voice and appearance resembled more the ones of a person on a dying bed than the ones of a 25 year-old hunter. He sighed in resignation and focused his eyes on the main road once again. Meanwhile Sam gripped the fabric so tightly his knuckles seemed as if they were about to jump out of his skin. He could feel his own bones burning on his inside along with his muscles and flesh.

“How… long?” he whispered.
“We’re almost there, boy” Bobby mumbled shooting quick glances through the review mirror “just hang on”

Sam breathed as deeply as his lungs allowed him to. It would only take a couple of minutes for them to get there, he didn’t know how bad his actual conditions was he was more worried about his brother, but there was one thing he was sure of he was dying. In barely seconds the Impala stopped with a loud purr and the front door opened with a screech. Sam looked through the window, they were now parked several feet in font of a small motel, there was a row with several doors each leading to a different motel room. When he opened the door Bobby was already there offering his hand for support, in any other situation Sam would have thanked but rejected the help but his wasn’t the time to take acre of his own pride, the pain and weakness that filled even the tiniest hair from his body was increasing intensity at a ridiculously fast rate.

Sam heard how the opposite door to his opened and slammed shut in no time just as Bobby helped him get on his feet.

“What happened to you?” Ruby said.

Sam turned around immediately, holding on to the hood of the Impala. Mia had just walked out of one of the rooms and was standing in front of Ruby, her clothes were wet and there were several dark spots on like old bruises on her face, neck and arms.

“We have a little situation going on here”
“Situation? Where’s blondie?” Ruby said looking over Mia’s shoulder.

Mia breathed deeply and threw a quick glance at Sam before leaning closer to Ruby and whispering something on her ear so low that Sam couldn’t catch. Ruby stepped back, her eyes widened and mouth half open. Mia nodded briefly.

“Fuck” Ruby mumbled “he did this to you?”
“Shh” Mia cut her off.

She looked back at one of the rooms and nodded slightly.

“Where are the rest of the guests?” Ruby said looking around the apparently deserted motel.
“I activated the fire alarm and evacuated the guests, I also sent the owner to take a nap he’ll probably wake up tomorrow” she sighed “I couldn’t risk them” Mia shook her head “He’s more powerful than you can imagine”
“Please… he’s just-” Ruby stopped herself in the middle of a sentence “he can’t be too dangerous, not yet”
“I wouldn’t’ count on that” Mia shook her head “We have no time to lose, we need one to save the other… in both cases”

For several seconds they stared into each other’s eyes not saying a single word.

“He’s dying” she whispered.
“What? He can’t… I thought you just said he was gaining power” Ruby shook her head confused.
“I’m not talking about Dean”

Sam’s heart cam to a halt just as three pairs of eyes fixed on him. He looked at Bobby, who clearly had overheard the whole conversation just as ye had, and ten at the angel and the demon staring at him, all with concerned looks.

“You should have noticed dome something” Mia said looking back at Ruby.
“What did you want me to do tie him down? Ground him?”

Mia sighed.

“he’s not ready to see him” she shook he head “Go watch over Dean and don’t underestimate him, I’ll talk to Sam”

Ruby stood there motionless for a fraction of a second, clearly not happy with the direction things were taking, but then she walked over to the door in front of them. Meanwhile Mia approached Sam and Bobby.

“Bobby…” she whispered “Would you mind giving us a second, please?”

He looked at her and then at Sam dubious. Sam was too weak, besides he deserved some explanations on his own.

“I don’t think so” he said “Sam’s too weak and the hell is happening to Dean?”
“It’s ok, Bobby” Sam whispered is voice so low it sounded more like a lament “I want to”

Bobby examined him for a couple of seconds.

“You can go in, Ruby will explain what’s happening” Mia reassured him “We’ll join you in a couple of minutes, just… be prepared for what you’ll see”

He sighed and rested his hand on Sam’s shoulder gently, as if supporting him, and then walked away. Sam and Mia just stared into each other’s eyes as he left. Sam was now leaning against the car, an arm falling to his side while the other one was wrapped around his stomach as he tried to hold himself together.

“What have you done?” Mia whispered just as they heard the door of the motel room closing behind Bobby.
“How’s Dean? What happened to him?” he said almost out of breath, totally ignoring her comment.
“Dean… is not in the best conditions right now” she shook her head “that’s why I need your help. Sam, what was the exact deal you and Asmodeus made?”

Sam cocked his eyebrow as he bent down slightly looking for a position where the pain didn’t numb his senses. Dean was in danger probably in pain, what difference did that damn deal made right now?

“Please, do it”
“I…” he shook his head slightly as if trying to bring back and old memory “I ased him to bring Dean back, he said he’d do it but we had to kill Lilith in less than seven days as a payback”
“Or…”

Sam stood still for a couple of second in deep thought, suddenlyo his eyes widened and his jaw clenched. Everything made sense now “Or we’d become demons” he whispered.
“Oh God” Mia looked away.
“Dean-“ Sam began to say, desperation filling his voice. He could feel his chest moving p and down as his breathing became faster “he isn’t, right?”

Mia nodded.
Sam felt how his heart seemed to shrink inside his chest, how hadn’t he thought about this before? What kind of pain would Dean be gong through?

“I should have known”
“Asmodeus is a dealer, it’s his specialty” Mia said “he plays with words so you believe what he wants you to”
“But why him? why not me?” Sam shook his head.
“Sam, you are alive, you went to hell willingly” she continued “Dean on the other hand… well you could say he was under Asmodeus guard and he still is”
“What is happening to him? Is he in pain?”
“Just a little” she whispered “But its nothing compared to what I’ll have to put you through”

Mia’s expression showed nothing but anguish as she said this.

“What?” was all Sam could say.
“What you’ve done to yourself is not something that can be easily erase” she shook her hand “He needs you to save him, as much as I need him to help me save you”

Sam stood there perplex in his own thoughts and Mia’s words for several seconds, he couldn’t care less about whatever pain he’d have to face, right now any minute would be vital to save his brother.

“What do I have to do?”
“Just wait, it won’t be so simple”
“Iv’e exorcised demons before, I’ve-” Sam said but Mia cut him off.
“Sam” Mia sighed “Dean is not possessed by a demon, he’s becoming one. Exorcising him wouldn’t just take the demonic part off him, it would rip out his soul”
Sam’s eyes widened as he looked at the motel door Bobby had just crossed and then back at Mia “Tell me what I need to do, anything!”
“Dean is turning fast, but he is still in there… holding stronger than it seems” she said “Your brother is lying inside his own body, he’s just masked by this demonic side. I need you to talk to him, to wake him up” she said “You are the only one with such a strong bond with him, if you can’t wake him up, no one can”
“Let’s do it”

Sam and Mia looked at each other for a couple of seconds, and then she placed her arm around his torso helping him and giving him support. They began to walk just as fast as Sam’s sore body allowed him to, but as they did Sam didn’t take his eyes off her.

Mia’s angelic face look tired and had several dark spots on it, probably bruises healed quicke4 by her own abilities, her eyes showed concern along with a hint of pure pain. He had to admit this took him by surprise, Sam had always thought of angels to be caring beings but this point of emotion towards him and his brother went beyond his expectations.

Before he knew it they had stopped. Mia shifted Sam’s weight to one of her sides and opened the room’s door with her other hand. Sam looked up and felt his chest tighten just as he placed eyes on his brother. Dean was in the middle of the motel room, a circle with several words was painted on the ceiling over his head and a devil’s trap on the floor underneath his feet. His legs and arms were tied to the chair he was sitting on. Sam’s jaw fell just as his eyes met Dean’s.

“Hello, Sammy” Dean said, his voice sounding loud and confident, with glimpses of mock and pride. “What took you so long?” he half smiled.

Dean was looking spotless, unlike Mia, he was wet probably of holly water but other than that he mocking broad smile and the completely black eyes were the only hints of the battle taking place inside of him.

“Dean?” Sam said letting go of Mia’s grip and taking a step forward.
“Careful, Sam” Ruby said from his left, she had now a thin string of blood running down from her just cut lip.

Sam stopped on his hells with Ruby’s sudden warn and lost balance, he had almost forgotten his actual condition. Mia quickly stood by him and held his arm.

“You are too weak to stand on your own” she whispered on his ear.
“How touching” Dean mocked as his black eyes remained fixed on them.
“Shut your pie hole, blondie” Ruby said pacing around him in circles “You are not in the best position right now”

He grinned and shook his head slightly.

“You shouldn’t be so confident, Barbie” he mocked “I think you’ve already had a prove of what I can do” he smiled looking at Ruby’s lip “Besides I’m only here cause I haven’t tried to get myself free”
“Right, as if-”
“Ruby!” Bobby yelled from their right “Stop provoking him… that’s what he wants”

Dean turned his head towards Bobby, who was standing in the far corner of the room.

“What happened, Bobby?” Dean said “Does this bring old memories? First your beloved wife gets possessed and you can’t save her…. Now one of your boys is turning into a demon and there’s nothing you can do about it”
“You, son of a bitch!” Bobby mumbled.
“Oh” Dean shook his head.

Immediately Bobby’s feet left the ground just as he flew at full speed against the bathroom’s door making it fall to the floor just as he crossed the threshold.

“Bobby!” Sam screamed as he saw the older man lying unconscious in the bathroom’s floor.
“Sam, talk to him” Mia said, her eyes were fixed on Dean’s.

Sam turned to look at his brother but felt as if a lump had just stuck inside his throat.

“That’s all? You are going to talk?” Dean raised both of his eyebrows in disbelief just as he busted into laughter “No wonder why things are the way they are… an old man, a sick hunter, a demon with identity issues and an angsty angel-”

Suddenly he stopped just as Ruby poured the holly water from a small bottle over him.

“No!” Mia shouted, but it was too late.
“Argh” Dean complained, his whole body shook momentarily in pain as he gripped the chair tightly.

Smoke came out of every pace where the holy water had had contact with his sin, just like burning acid. Then for several seconds Dean’s head remained down.

“Run” he whispered.
“Excuse me?” Ruby said.

Sam and Mia looked at each other, not sure of what to expect.

“I said-” he continued just as he looked up “Run!”

Dean’s eyes were green once again but turned black almost right away. He smiled once again.

“Just ignore this little episode” Dean continued “Now were was I?” he said between his teeth and shot a glance at Ruby.

She took a step towards him defiantly but stopped on her heels just as her eyes widened.

“What happened Ruby?” Dean said half smiling “Don’t worry, you’ll be ok… too bad I can’t said the same of your meat suit”
“Dean…” Sam said in a low voice.

Meanwhile Ruby fell to her knees and began to cough unstoppably; she twitched and rolled on the ground.
“Stop it!” Mia said as she approached him “You’ve done enough!”

She stopped right in front of him, her hands closed into fists as she tired not to lose control of herself. Anything she did would hurt him now, perhaps too badly. Dean just turned his eyes towards her, surprised at first but in just seconds back to the same sarcasm and cockiness from before.

“Or what?” he smiled “You know you can’t do anything against me… well you can, but you won’t. Your beloved Dean is to precious for you to risk” it was easy to see he was enjoying this “All this guardian angel stuff is going too far for you now, its like can’t even handle so see him suffer, can you? His pain is your own”
“Shut up!” She screamed as she stretched her hand.

A pale glow came off her and pushed Dean back against his seat, so strongly it almost made the chair fall backwards. For several seconds he didn’t say a thing and simply remained there, but finally be laughed.

“Don’t do this, Dean” she whispered “You don’t have to do this”
“Oh, but I want to” he looked up at her.

He looked down at Ruby as she longed for air. Finally a cloud of thick black smoke flew out of her mouth and through the small opening underneath the entrance door. Suddenly the ground began to shake wildly. Sam grabbed the cabinet by the door for support, he was feeling even weaker than before, not to mention how much it hurt him to see what his brother was becoming.

With a loud bang the ceiling cracked and began to fall into pieces just as a crack broke the floor in two, right Dean stood.

“Close your eyes, Sam” Mia whispered as she stood by him.

He tried to over his head with his hands just as he closed his eyes. Immediately he felt a sensation of warmth surround him, this was not similar to anything he had experienced before, not even like transporting. He could feel a sensation of peace and warmth surround him, like protection. Finally the sound of the concrete breaking and falling to the ground dissipated.

Out of the sudden with a scream of agony the warmth was taken away from him. He opened his eyes quickly just to see Mia standing up from the floor covered in dust and with several scratches already healing all over her body. Just by the time she was on her feet something sent her flying towards the cabinet by Sam, she hit her head with it and fell to the ground.

“Mia” he whispered as he took a deep breath. He wouldn’t take it anymore.
“Seems its jut you and me, Sammy”
“Leave my brother alone” he said between his teeth.
“I am your brother!” he smiled and walked towards him. The shreds of the pieces of cloth that held him on the chair were still tied around his wrists.
“No, you are not” Sam shook his head “Dean, c’mon take control, I know you are in there. Dean”

He flinched for a second, his eyes turning to their normal green once again momentarily and back to black in barely seconds. Sam took a step back as he approached. He was too weak to give him a fight and any form of exorcism he did would hurt his brother.
“It won’t be so easy” Dean mumbled and with a movement of his hand sent Sam flying and slammed him against the wall.

He felt to the ground on his stomach, but rolled over immediately.

“Dean, don’t do this, you are stronger than this” Sam said afraid as he crawled backwards.
“Enough with the chat!”
“Do you remember when we were little? Dad used to go hunting and it was just the two of us” he tried to catch his breath “we promise we would never do that, we promise we would never leave each other”

The demon stopped right in front of him, pulled him up by the collar and pushed him against the wall.

“Please, Dean, stop this”

Dean’s hand closed around Sam’s neck and pulled him up so his feet were barely touching the ground.

“You told me you’d take are of me” Sam said, using the little air left on his lungs, now more than ever he felt as a stranger inside his own body, as if he was about to leave it any time. “and that… that you’ never let anything get between us. You promised”

Sam felt his eyes closing mechanically, but he fought it with a great effort.

“No” Dean said, but the voice was different now, lower and softer “I won’t let that happen”

Immediately Sam opened his eyes just as his feet touched the ground, again the air came into his lungs. He leaned against the wall just as his eyes meet Dean’s green eyes, his brother’s eyes.

“Dean” he whispered and half smiled.

Then he breathed as he felt as if a heavy load had just fallen over his shoulders, his body no longer belonged to him. Sam closed his eyes just as he stopped fighting, immediately he felt to the ground harshly and everything disappeared.
