“Sam,” a voice called from the distance. “Sam!!” this time it was louder.
He opened his eyes, his chest moving up and down quickly as he breathed and his hands shook. It had been a dream…or perhaps a vision, Sam wasn’t too sure. He took a look around quickly and noticed he was now lying on the ground of the dark room, between the two beds.
“Are you ok?” Mia said, kneeling on the floor right next to him.
He looked at her for a couple of seconds, trying to remember everything that had happened before he fell unconscious.
“Yeah, sure,” he sat up.
“We have to get out quick,” she said, fear reflected in her eyes. “They are coming.”
“They? Who?” He rested his hand on the side of his head, for some reason images of that nightmare were still rolling around his mind, not letting him think straight.
“Demons, Lilith’s soldiers,” Mia grabbed him by the hand and helped him up.
“Here? How did they find us?”
“No clue, but for now we must leave as fast as possible”
Sam could hear several noises coming from the other side of the room.
“What the hell?” he said in the middle of the darkness.
“Welcome back to the world of the living,” Ruby’s voice came from that same corner.
“What are you doing?”
“Packing your stuff,” she said, “and searching for these…” the sound of something clanging against each other pierced the quiet of the room.
He searched his pockets frantically; those were beyond a doubt the keys of the Impala.
“Give them to me,” he said stretching out his hand, there was no way he was going to let her drive Dean’s car.
“Sam,” Mia rested her hand on his shoulder. “We can’t leave in the Impala, it’ll be too obvious and it’s easier to track.”
“What? Hell no, I’m not leaving the car behind!” Sam said reluctantly. “Ruby, give me the keys.”
“We won’t leave it here,” Mia insisted “Ruby will take it, in case they track it, she’ll act as bait. It’ll get us some time.”
Sam’s eyes moved in the darkness to where Ruby was standing and back to Mia.
“No. That car is all I have left from Dean and I…”
“Well if you don’t hurry, crybaby, you’ll lose Dean’s body too,” Ruby said, clearly pissed off by the amount of time lost. “We have no time to have this childish conversation-”
“Ruby-“
“No,” she continued, cutting Mia off. “Sam, the war hasn’t started yet and if you wanna make it through it you must rearrange your priorities.”
For a brief period of time there was silence. Sam’s head was spinning fast; he still had parts of his vision suddenly flashing in his mind, demons after him, a car and his brother’s dead body. He took a deep breath as he nodded.
“Ok,” he said finally “What’s the plan?”
“Ruby will take the car,” Mia explained again, “and Dean, you and I will go together. Hopefully they won’t catch any of us, but in case they get any trail, they’ll probably follow the Impala and that’s when Ruby comes in, she’ll work as bait and get us some time.”
“And kill some of those suckers on the way too,” Ruby added.
“Meanwhile we’ll leave…”
“Leave? How? I mean the fastest way out is the car… if we just walk away they’ll be stepping on our footsteps, it’ll be no time before they find us.”
“Who said we’d walk?” Mia answered.
“I’ll try to take them as far away as I can, probably to another state…” Ruby began. “I’ll see you soon, but in the meantime… don’t do anything stupid.”
After saying this, the front door of the small motel room opened and slammed shut in no time.
“Wait a sec… if we are not walking how the hell are we leaving?”
“Did you take your bag already?” Mia said sitting besides Dean.
“No! How…”
“Sam, just do it!”
Quickly Sam stretched his hand, grabbed the book that was hidden behind it and put it inside before closing the zipper. As he did they heard a loud scream coming from the hotel’s reception area.
“Oh, no,” Mia muttered. “They are here.”
“How are we leaving? Tell me, now!” Sam demanded as he walked towards her.
“Don’t worry; I have one last ace hidden under my sleeve.” Sam wasn’t able to tell in the darkness, but by the tone of her voice he could swear she was smiling “Hold on to me tightly.”
“How about Dean?”
“I got him, already,” she said. “Sam, we must hurry.”
“What do you mean-”
“Now!”
Sam quickly held her, wrapping one arm around her waist and the other around her arm. Almost immediately he was blinded by a white light, he closed his eyes as he got a feeling of emptiness in his stomach and his chest tightened; this felt like he was running down an endless rollercoaster without any brakes.
All of the sudden he felt the ground beneath his feet once again. Slowly he opened his eyes; they were no longer in the room, but in the middle of a dark forest, surrounded by bushes and tall trees. The moon shone brightly in the middle of the dark sky, giving him a clear view of what was around. Sam was still holding Mia tightly, and as he looked at her he could see she was holding Dean’s body in her arms firmly but yet carefully as if he might break from the slightest pressure.
“That should complicate things for them… a bit,” she said a little agitated, looking back at Sam.
He was still motionless.
“Sam…” she half smiled, “would you mind?”
“What?” For a moment he didn’t seem to understand but then he looked down, his hands were still wrapped tightly around Mia’s body. “Oh… sorry,” he immediately let go of her, blushing slightly and looked around, trying to see beyond the apparently endless sets of bushes.
“Never mind,” she said as she sat down and rested Dean’s head on her legs.
There was a brief pause in which none of them talked, but simply laid there.
“How did you do that anyways?”
Sam turned to look at her once again. She was now breathing heavily; resting her palms against the several layers of leafs that covered the ground.
“Mia?” he took a step towards her, but she simply gestured him to wait. “Are you ok?” he said not paying attention to her gesture, but kneeling besides her instead.
“Yeah…” she half smiled as she tried to catch her breath. “I’m fine, just a bit tired.”
“Because of what you just did?”
She just looked up at him, her eyes wide open.
“I know you did that… whatever it was,” he half smiled. “I just want to thank you,” he nodded. “I mean I know I haven’t been the most reasonable or understanding person, and you just wanted to help.”
“Don’t worry,” she shook her head.
“By the way, what was that thing you did back there?” he said looking around. “I mean, we certainly aren’t anywhere near the motel anymore.”
“Actually we must be about 5 miles away,” she said resting her hand on her stomach and turning to Sam again. “I just transported us.”
Sam’s eyes widened as he looked at her.
“You must be full of surprises.”
“I wouldn’t bet on that,” she laughed. “That was about the last trick I had.”
“How are you feeling?”
“Better… thanks,” she looked at him for a couple of seconds, studying his features. “Anyways, we lost them for now, but it won’t be long until they find a trail again so we better hurry.”
“Yeah,” he said standing up and taking Dean’s body in his arms. He looked so defenseless, completely unaware of the danger around them.
“Ruby is heading northeast.”
“So we’d better go the opposite way,” Sam muttered.
“Are you ready for a second jump?” Mia said.
“Are you sure you can do that again, I mean…” he looked at her, she wasn’t looking her best but there was still that spark in her eyes.
“Sam,” she said resting her hand on his shoulder. “I’m fine. Besides we are still really far from where we are supposed to be, if they got to us back in that motel, they can get to us here.”
He looked down at his brother as he held him in his arms. Dean wasn’t in the best conditions to travel, besides he couldn’t wait to be alone, for some reason he couldn’t take that book off his mind, there had to be something else in it, something to help him or at least give him a hint of what to do.
“Ready,” he looked up at her.
“Ok,” she said.
Mia walked over and turned slowly, stood behind him and closed her arms around his torso. Sam could feel the red glowing on his cheeks as she did so and was thankful that they were in the middle of a dark place. Next thing he knew there it was again, the same sensation of moving really fast, but this time it was much faster than before and the sensation lasted longer. They were definitely traveling a long distance. Sam held Dean’s body tightly, as he felt how that moving force seemed to pull his brother’s body away from his.
Finally they landed. Sam opened his eyes and looked around, they were in the middle of a lonely road, and there were no lights at the sides, nor any houses, buildings, nothing. It was just plain ground as far as his eyes allowed him to see. He quickly looked around and saw a road in the distance; Sam took a couple of steps forward trying to read what it said. “San Antonio 15 miles.”
“Texas?” he muttered under his breath.
Then he turned around quickly.
“Did we just…” but he stopped in the middle of his sentence.
Mia was kneeling down in the middle of the road, both of her hands resting on the cold pavement.
“Mia!” he said running back towards her, as fast as Dean’s weight allowed him to. “Are you ok?”
He just stared at her for a minute, the movement of her shoulders and torso up and down showed him that she was still breathing, and it was the only thing comforting him at the time.
Finally she placed her right foot on the ground and used her own knee as support to pull herself up.
“I’m great,” she said in a low voice.
“We are in Texas”
She simply nodded and zipped up her black leather jacket.
“You shouldn’t have brought us this far,” he looked at her unable to hide the concern in his voice.
“Don’t worry,” she said. “I’m fine! We shouldn’t lose any time.”
“We are 15 miles from the nearest city, where could we possibly go?”
“There’s a gas station, a market and a small motel not far from here,” she muttered.
“How’d you know?”
She looked up at him; he was at least two heads taller than her even when she wore high boots. “You wouldn’t think I’d just bring you to a place I had no idea about, right?” she made a pause. “An old friend owns the place, a hunter.”
Sam looked at her hesitantly, he wasn’t sure he wanted to be around another hunter at the moment. It was easy to fool normal people about what he did, hiding the guns, going out at night and now carrying Dean’s body, it would be really hard to hide that from a hunter.
“Don’t worry,” she said noticing the concern on his eyes, “not a single word about anything, I’ll just tell him you are a hunter, he doesn’t need to know anything else,” she looked at him from head to toe. “But still I wouldn’t suggest you spend too much time around him, I mean he’s old and all but your face is pretty known among hunters these days.”
Sam simply nodded and they started walking. The air was cold, and run freely from one side of the lonely road to the other hitting their faces with every step they took. Eventually Sam looked over to the side. Mia wasn’t speaking much, neither complaining but still he could notice by the way she walked that transporting three people took a lot of effort even from an angel.
“Could you stop it?” she half smiled, her eyes still focused on the road.
“Sorry,” he looked to the front again.
“I’m stronger than you think.”
“Yeah, I know,” he took a deep breath and looked up in deep thought. “It’s just that you look so…”
“Fragile?”
“I was going to say human,” he said still not looking at her.
“That’s because I’m not that different from one.”
He looked down at her once again waiting for her to look back at him or to say something, but she didn’t. Sam guessed she didn’t feel like talking or just wasn’t comfortable sharing that with him, any way it was, he didn’t blame her.
