That's Hellfire

The air was dense, more like steam or hot vapor, threatening to burn anyone who dared spending too much time in it. The ground was uneven, filled with rocks and cracks, and had tainted red colorations, as if several layers of blood had covered it and dried one over the other through an endless time. Screams and shouts could be heard at a distance, accompanied by a rough sound like rocks crashing against each other.

Despite the deadly conditions and the smell of blood that filled the place, its steps were firm, heat didn’t seem to bother it, after all this was its environment, its skin was thick and was used to it. Not paying the slightest attention to the several people crying loud screams of despair around him, tortured, hurt and mutilated, it kept walking. Why would it care about them?

The hideous creature continued on its way, and then got out from the others’ sight as the path it followed turned into a narrow tunnel. Then it stopped all of a sudden.

The voice of the creature was a low growl, like a terrifying whisper, as it slid what seemed like words one after the other.

“Oh fuck it already!” a man’s voice said.

There was a brief silence.

“So… we are not in a chatty mood today, are we?” the rough growling voice said, now talking clearly.

As he said this, rows of fire appeared on the floor, at the sides of the just revealed room. The place where it was standing in at the moment was different from the previous fire lit big chamber, this was much smaller, but it had what seemed like endless walls since there was no apparent ceiling but just darkness above them and a strong smell filled the place.

“C’mon… I just moved you from that awful place you were staying in and brought you to the master room,” the creature laughed mockingly. “Anyone else would be grateful.”

“What the hell do you want now?”

“Oh, don’t treat me like that, Dean,” the creature said once again pretending to be offended. “After a month I thought we would be friends already.”

“Screw you…” Dean’s voice was fierce, but definitely lower and a bit rougher than it used to be.

They just looked at each other in the middle of the darkness. The creature standing in front of Dean was awful, as if just taken out of a nightmare. Its skin was black, with scales and several burns, had thick legs and long arms that ended on sharp claws. His face resembled one of a man, with strong features, dark coloration and scales at the sides. But probably the most disturbing feature of the creature, besides the sharp fangs that came out of its mouth were its eyes, they had no trace of light in them and had a drained green coloring with a deadly glow. Dean eyes were fixed on it.

“Don’t look at me like that, you offend me!” the creature mocked “I made this appearance specially to come see you.” It made a brief pause. “But since you insist…”

Right in front of his eyes, Dean could see how the creature shrieked and twitched as his shape and skin changed. As it stood straight once again, Dean was no longer looking at a deformed creature, a man was now staring at him, he was tall and pale with blond hair, the only thing that remained the same were his eyes.

“Better?” he said stretching his arms at his sides so Dean could take a better look at him.

“You are still fugly,” Dean said, more agitated with every breath he took.

“Ha,” the demon standing before him half smiled. “Let me say you are not in the best of shape either.”

As much as Dean hated to admit, it was right. He was hanging at least 4 meters above the ground. Chains that pulled him were tight around his wrists and ankles, also a hook was piercing his flesh right on his shoulder, just like he had been for so long, but now besides that there were two other ones, on his waist and chest puling him to the sides threatening to break him in two, so tight they barely allowed him to breathe and were now piercing his flesh causing blood to run down his bare torso. Not to mention the several bruises and cuts, and the fact that the long exposure to sulfur was causing his eyes to ache.

“I just came here because I wanted to help you.”

Dean looked up at the demon. He had blood running from his eyes and mouth. For a moment he remained silent, but then unable to contain it anymore he busted into laughter.

“Help me? Please…” he half smiled.

“Well that’s too bad…” the demon turned around. “I was just about to tell you about your brother… I would have guessed you wanted to know about him, specially after all the times you screamed his name desperate, lost in pain and fear… but since you don’t want to-”

“Stop!” Dean said almost regretting it.
“That’s better,” the creature said turning around, with a smile from ear to ear, it was definitely pleased. “Good choice. Because I’m sure you want to know about this…” he said, “well sooner or later you were going to find out anyways.”

“About what?”

“Oh, don’t give me that tone,” he half smiled. “Your precious little Sammy is ok, at least for now. You know, I saw Azazel or the yellow eyed demon as you used to call him, do it so many times, but I didn’t know it would actually be this fun,” he laughed. “Your little brother is so easy to convince, he believes everything in those visions of his.”

“What are you talking about? What did you do to him?” Dean said, his eyes wide open.

“Not what I did… what I am going to do,” his grin showed nothing but pure evil in it. “You know since you died, Sam has been so lonely… having awful nightmares, even worse than he was after Jessica died,” he walked closer to where Dean was hanging. “Poor little puppy, can’t handle living without his brother. But you know what I’m going to do?” he made a brief pause as he looked away and paced towards the other side of the room. “Being as good and gentle as I am, I’ll grant him his wish… I led him towards a way of getting his big brother back,” he was no longer paying attention to Dean. “But… everything has a price, right?”

“No!” Dean said “You leave my brother alone or I swear I’ll-”

“What?” it turned up to look at Dean again. “You’ll what?” he half smiled. “Face it, there’s nothing you can do.”

“What do you want from him? You already have me… isn’t it enough?” Dean said trying to keep his breathing steady. “Torture me, burn me, stab me… me. Not him. Just leave him…”

“Awww, that’s so touching,” it laughed “Big brother Dean taking care of his little Sam. But I think it really is time for Sam to face it on his own… and for the world to really see what a king must look like,” he half smiled. “So don’t worry, you’ll see him soon and if you are good enough I’ll even let you two share the same chamber.”

“No…” Dean said.

“Bye, Dean”

“NO!!” Dean yelled as he pulled the chains that kept him prisoner.

Then as the demon left the room everything turned into darkness.

“SAM!!!”

. . .

“…and angels,” Sam whispered, almost not believing the words that just came out of his mouth.

“…yes, indeed,” Mia said turning her sight back to Dean's inert body.

“But I…”

“You thought we didn’t exist,” she half smiled. “Don’t worry; you are not the only one,” she sighed. “With every year that goes by more people have stopped believing. That whole believe in what you can see thing is definitely killing faith these days. Bottom line is, angels have walked among men every single day, but they just can’t see us.”

Sam looked down and then up at her.

“But then you are …”

“Your guardian angel? No,” she half smiled, “but I’m here to help you, though.”

There was a brief pause, and she stood up from the bed. Sam noticed her movements were now slower than before, as if she was now walking in slow motion, and her face looked tired.

“He’s healed now, just don’t move him too much, he’s still very delicate” Mia said.

“But wait a sec…” Sam said now looking at the two girls that shared the room with him. “If you are an angel, then how did you two meet?”

Mia and Ruby looked at each other.

“Sam, just because I’m an angel doesn’t mean I have to be in heaven all the time,” she said. “I’ve spent quite a long time on Earth, and to my surprise I found something I never thought I would… a demon with a heart,” she said, then walked towards the door. “You two better rest, we’ll have a long day tomorrow.”

“Where are you going?” Sam said confused.

“Outside,” she smiled “I’m mounting guard tonight.”

Right after saying that the door shut. Sam’s eyes quickly turned to look at his brother. He bent down quickly and ran his fingers over his chest, right where he had just seen the wounds vanish, Dean was healed, and he didn’t have a single scratch.

“Sam… just give her a chance,” Ruby’s voice broke the silence.

Sam stopped suddenly; he had forgotten she was still standing in there. For a brief moment there was complete silence, and then Sam sighed and looked down.

“You know… I prayed so hard for help for so long and nothing came,” he half smiled as he turned around, “but after Dean’s…” he stopped. “I never did again, I thought I was alone and had to get used to it,” he shook his head. “I just find it funny, that all the years I prayed for a miracle to happen, for some aid to come our way, but it didn’t and now that I stopped…”

“Well, maybe I’m not the most adequate person to talk to you about faith… but maybe this is the answer to your prayers.”

Without saying more she turned around and walked towards the door.

“Are you leaving too?”

“I’ll be outside,” she said. “Besides I think you want some time alone to really think things through.”

Having this said she walked out the door, too.

Sam simply remained there sitting next Dean. Angels… Now? Where were angels when Dean was being killed off by the hellhounds? Or when they were fighting the yellow eyed demon? For 25 years his life and his family had been filled with suffering and pain, and where were angels then? But then he kept thinking about what Ruby had just said, maybe this was the time that he needed help the most and maybe this girl was it.

He stood up and sat on the other bed, took a look at the windows and then took the book from underneath his bag. Once again Sam opened it and started going through the pages. He spent what seemed like hours reading, learning and searching, he could totally tell why Lilith wanted this book and why Samuel Colt took so much time to write it. Suddenly his head started hurting, maybe from all the things going around it or from the sick day he had just had, you’ve read too much, that’s it he repeated to himself as he rested his right palm against his face, the pain was slowly increasing. He let himself fall on the bed, so he was now resting his head on the pillow as his sight turned blurry.

He felt cold and everything around him was dark, he could hear steps and low sounds in the distance, it was just like standing in a lonely forest in the middle of a starless night. Sam looked around, but it didn’t matter how hard he tried there was just no way of seeing through the unbreakable darkness. Then his head hurt and he could see a drop of crimson blood falling into a pond of water, then a black feather falling to the ground and an open book with pages that turned quickly only stopping when it reached a page with the title ‘Demons and Deals’. Suddenly he felt heat, the temperature was quickly rising, then a light appeared at the end of the tunnel, it was fire, he could see the flames swirling up and then he saw him. Dean was chained from his arms and legs; a string of blood was falling from his open mouth. Then it all disappeared.

“SAM!!” he could hear his brother scream from the top of his lungs.

Then there was silence
