Fauna and Flora

The rock is the size of a freaking grapefruit. That's Dean's last coherent thought before it actually meets his head, right over his left eye.

:::

"Dean."

"Shuddup."

"You have to stay awake."

"You have to shuddup. Seriousssly."

Dean is lying on the ground, over a bed of fallen leaves under the cover of gigantic trees that remind him of the sequoia trees he and Sam saw when they drove through Cali that one time. Except sequoia trunks aren't twisted and carved with faces in agony and their leaves aren’t dripping with what looks like blood.

Well. It is Purgatory, Dean thinks with philosophy. New local flora and fauna. And no sun. No day, period. Always a black, windy, cold and stormy night.

He blinks lazily, careful not to move his head. Hurts like Hell. His stomach is churning and there's bile rising in his throat. Great. After starving for days, now he's gonna puke up what little he’s managed to eat so far.

He raises his hand and carefully touches the bump on his forehead, wincing. Size of an orange. A small one.

What's with this citrus obsession suddenly?

He looks at the starless sky and the long tree branches obscuring it. They start to shift, and Dean's not sure if it's another dizzy spell or just Purgatory playing with him.

"Cas? Are the tree branches dancing?"

"No," the angel's voice says from somewhere to his left.

"Okay then. Not feeling so great."

He starts to gag and feels Castiel's hands pulling him up and to his side. He pukes for what seems like an eternity. The stomach juices that are expelled violently out of him burn his throat and mouth. Each time he heaves, a bolt of pain explodes behind his eyes. He feels miserable and lost and homesick.

Then everything fades.

:::

Next time Dean wakes up, he's still lying on the ground on his left side. Something's covering him: Castiel's trenchcoat, he guesses. An orangey light is dancing in front of his eyes. It takes him some time to realize it's fire, but once he does it's like all of his senses come back online at the same time. He feels the small flames warming his face, hears the wood snapping and cracking, smells the smoke as it prickles his nostrils.

His headache has backed off a little and his stomach has settled. He's almost comfortable.

Dean slowly raises his head and sees Castiel next to him, sitting cross-legged and looking pale and eerie in his white hospital clothes.

"Everything okay?" Dean asks, voice still a bit slurry.

Castiel looks at him and the corners of his mouth twitch up in a small smile. "Yes, Dean. Everything is fine. I succeeded in alleviating your concussion symptoms."

The angel looks quite proud of himself, and Dean can't help but return the smile. Since they’ve been here, Castiel's mojo has come and gone. He doesn't really know why his powers have become so sporadic and Dean can tell he feels inadequate because of it. He looks more and more like his old self, as if Purgatory is cleaning him of Sam's madness.

Like it has cleaned Dean of the withdrawing symptoms he had experienced during the first couple of days, when he couldn't do anything but puke and shake as he laboriously followed Cas, looking for a safe place to hunker down, longing for the sweet sensation of alcohol burning down his throat.

He doesn't remember much, but had thanked the angel when he had started to feel better. "I didn't do anything, Dean. It's Purgatory."

"Why would Purgatory help me detox?"

"It remains a mystery to me." The angel had stated.

The fire gets bullied by the wind and small bright sparks fly up to join the dull darkness of the sky. It's kind of pretty.

"I found water," Castiel says, kneeling in front of him.

He holds the curved bark piece Dean had found to collect water. It’s hard to find water here; there are no rivers or lakes, only very thin streams that are almost unreachable because that's where the monsters like to gather. Castiel never drinks. Dean himself knows he's not as thirsty as he should be. Can't even figure out if all of him is really here, if his body is still his. He didn't have his body back when he was in Hell, but it sure felt like it when Alastair tortured him.

He shivers. Castiel snaps his fingers in front of him, and Dean realizes he was drifting off again.

"Drink first, Dean."

He tries to rise on his elbows but his head complains and Castiel has to hold him close to his body. He presses the wooden bowl to Dean's chapped lips and delicately tips it.

The water tastes like wet soil and salt, but the sensation is still wonderful and Dean can't help but groan when Cas pulls the bark away.

"Enough, or you're gonna be sick again," he says softly, helping Dean settle back on his side.

Dean knows he should be annoyed, knows he should push Cas away and take care of himself, but he's tired and he's sick and he's so comfortable right now. It feels so good to just let go and leave everything up to Cas.

"How long has it been since we arrived?" he rasps.

"In earth time? Two weeks."

"In Purgatory time?"

Cas frowns and sits back, closer to him. The fire lights his eyes. "Time doesn't really pass here. It goes back and forth. You wouldn’t understand and I don't know how to explain it to you."

"Sam's gonna get us out of here."

"Your brother will definitely try."

That’s not the answer Dean wants to hear. There's too much compassion in Cas' voice.

"Yeah, and he'll succeed."

"Sleep, Dean. You need it."

The angel lays his hand on Dean's face, and he sleeps.

:::

Something's pushing on his stomach - soft little presses. Dean moves a bit, tries to get himself together. He must have turned on his back while he was sleeping. Cas' trenchcoat has slipped and only covers his left side. He can still hear and feel the fire. He's not cold.

The littles pushes are like paws walking on him. They move forward and he feels a weight settle on his chest. The weight is vibrating.

Wait.

Not vibrating. Purring.

Paws. Purr. Shit.

There's a warm sensation suddenly brushing over his face. Something ticklish caresses his cheeks and nose. Great, now he’s gonna sneeze.

No time to brace himself. He knows it's gonna hurt. His eyes fly open as the tickling gets stronger. breathe draws in a shuddering breath.

Just before he snaps forward with the force of the sneeze, he sees glowing green eyes looking right back at him.

"Fucking hell," he moans afterward. The throbbing sensation is back in his head. With a vengeance.

There's a monster sitting on you, he thinks with detachment.

Maybe it's the concussion, or the exhaustion, but all Dean can do is look back at it. The thing has backed off down his stomach, startled by his sudden sneeze.
I
It's… some sort of cat, like a giant kitten. Maybe it's more like a tiger. Baby tigers are about that size.

It's kind of cute. It's black with long, pointed white ears. The fur on its paws is white as well. It's got cat's eyes, glowing like little candles in the reflection of the fire and… yeah. The thing's got two tails; one black and one white. They’re tangled together and waving in the air.

"Hey, kitty," Dean says, because he's concussed; he totally has the right to find the thing cute.

He raises his hand and pats the cat-tiger thing on the head. It starts purring again, leaning into Dean's touch. He smiles.

The monster walks onto his chest and sits just below his neck. He begins to lick Dean's face with a pink tongue. Its texture is a bit rough. It sticks to Dean's skin and makes him giggle.

Then again, he's concussed. The freaking rock can take the blame for any unmanly laughter that may or may not take place.

The cat-thing stops for a second, then continues with its plan which seems to be licking every centimeter of Dean's face.

He tries to dislodge it, but the monster is insistent and Dean squirms and laughs again. As he raises his head a bit, he sees three other pair of glowing green eyes coming closer.

There's four of them. The other three are similar to the first one. The smallest one starts munching gently on his boot. The last two sit and look at him hesitantly.

"Huh. Cas?" Dean asks.

The angel appears over him and takes the tiger-kitten-fury thing in his hands to settle it on the ground next to Dean. It immediately begins to clean Dean's ear with its insistent little tongue. Dean shivers.

"Sorry. I was thinking and did not see them coming," Cas states, sitting on the ground.

The three other baby monsters immediately join him, rubbing themselves against Cas’ legs and purring in unison.

"What are they?"

"Nekomata."

Dean pets the… Nekomata that tries to burry its nose into his ear. "But what are they?"

"Japanese supernatural creatures."

"They don't look that dangerous."

"Not all monsters are."

"Oh."

"But these eat people."

Dean's hand stills in the Nekomata's fur. He winces. Of course, they eat people.

"Do not worry," Cas adds, still petting the kittens that are hovering around him. "They're too young to do so. They must have been killed shortly after their birth."

One of the Nekomatas tries to catch a fire spark with its clumsy paws. And yeah, it's adorable, alright?

"This place is fucked up," he states, and goes on with caressing the Nekomata that is purring next to his head.

"Want me to send them away? I think they were trying to warm themselves."

Dean slowly turns onto his side. The Nekomata settles itself in a ball against his chest. "No. They can stay. As long as you're sure they're not gonna eat me."

"They won't."

"Okay."

Dean feels tired again, but maybe it's just the soothing sensation of the kitten pressed against him, and the fire still burning, and the assurance that Cas watches over him. So he sleeps, better than he has since he got dragged to this strange place.

Fin

P.S. Nekomatas really are supernatural japanese cats. Thanks, wikipedia

Awwwwwwww!!! THE KITTEHS LOVE DEAN. :D :D Awww, they want to get warm and they died too young to be able to eat him AND THEY LICK HIM ALL OVER AND MAKE HIM SNEEEEZE. It's gorgeous too, the image of Cas sitting there in the flickering firelight all glowy-white in his scrubs, petting the kitties and knowing all about them. I love the kindness in this fic. ♥

Thank you so much ma belle!

My pleasure. And I have a heart!! (how the hell do you guys manage to do it?)

I was really worried about being unable to do something cute so I'm really glad you liked it.

And of course the kittens will make Dean sneeze (you think I would've miss the oportunity;-)

I even added a small dose of puking for newspapertaxi so... My work here is done.

And I know I only took part of two meme so far but this meme is like the greatest one in the history of LJ. Yes. I'm sure it is.

People are writing so many good stories. And they just keep coming.

:)
