[FANFIC] Umika's Ring

"Umika-chan? Why are you crying?" Chinen asked. He was re-reading his note in their earlier lesson when Umika entered their room, crying.
"Chii... the ring.. my ring... I think I lost it."
"Ring? What ring?" Chinen asked, a little panicky. Umika never cried like this before.
"Umika!" Someone called from outside. It was Saaya.
"Saaya, my ring..."
"It's here! I found it!" Saaya said beaming. She raised her hand and Chinen could see the diamond ring with 'Umika' written on the inside of the band. There was another word or maybe name, but Chinen wasn't able to read it.
Umika's whole face brighten. She took the ring from Saaya and hugged her in thanks.
"Thank you, thank you, thank you! I thought I'd lost it."
Saaya giggled. "I found it in Home Ec Lab."
"Oh. I removed it before we prepared the dough."
"Just take care of it next time okay? It's a very important ring." Saaya said.
"I will." Umika said hugging the ring to her.
Umika turned to Chinen. "It's okay now, Chii. Thanks for your concern. I'm sorry if I worried you."
Chinen just silently shook his head. Umika smiled at him and left.
Only one thing was running through his head, 'What was that ring about?'
"Hey, I heard Takano-sensei proposed to Mizuno-sensei!"
Chinen turned to the voice, wide-eyed.
Could it.. could it possibly be an engagement ring? But from who?
No, it can't be. They're only 17 years old. No, Umika was just 16 years old.
But according to Japanese Law, you are eligible to marry if you are a male 18 years old or over, or a female 16 or older.
'No. No. That's not possible.'
But for the next classes, Chinen looked at his classmate's (the girls) hand and no one was wearing a ring, lest a diamond ring with their names etched on it.
Shida-kun was wearing gloves but he was pretty sure she wasn't wearing any ring either.
'What was that ring? Why is it so important to Umika-chan?'
During their break, Chinen silently watched the girls.
They were laughing and then Umika showed them her hand--her ring and they squealed!!
Chinen could feel her heartbeat quickening.
Is it really an engagement ring? But he'd never heard anything about this! Weren't he and Umika close enough to be told about something this big? Or was that all him.
"Yo. Chii, why are you spacing out?" It was Yamada.
"What happened? Are you okay?" Yamada said worriedly. Chinen's face must be showing what he feels inside.
"Umika... Umika... she's gonna marry someone... She's... She's..."
"What?? What are you saying Chii??"
"Someone proposed to her! Before me! What will I do?? I'm not 18 yet! I couldn't possibly--"
Yamada laughed.
"Chii! Are you dreaming?? Wake up!"
"Yamada, I'm serious! What do I do?? I can't let anyone take Umika away from me!"
Strangely, everything seems to stop from that outburst.
"Ah, Chii?" It was Yuto this time. And as if on cue, everyone started making noise.
Chinen realized they were squealing and whooping and Umika was red in the face.
And it hit him. He just confessed to the whole class.
He wanted to disappear from the face of the planet.
"Chii, what are you saying earlier?" Yamada said, laughing at Chii's expense. "Umika," he called. "did someone propose to you?"
Umika, red faced, turned redder and shooked her head.
"Where did you get that idea?" she managed to asked.
"B-but the ring..." Chinen said.
"T-the ring? It's given by Mirai. Mirai-chan, Saaya-chan, Suzuka-chan and Mariya-chan all have the same as mine. Our names are also etched inside." Umika explained never looking away from the floor.
"But you showed to the girls earlier and they squealed and Suzuka and Saaya aren't wearing--"
"I am." Suzuka said then she took off her necklace.
Chinen realized she was wearing her ring as a pendant.
"And I had mine in my pocket. I was in charge of the garden today." Saaya said and she took out the same ring from her pocket.
"I wore mine all along. But I guess you didn't see because of my gloves. And earlier Umika just showed us Saaya's drawing of Cinnamoroll on her hand. It was cute so we squealed." Mirai said chuckling a little.
"That's a problem solved then." Yuto laughed. "Chii, you still have time to propose."
"Yeah!" Chii cheered, not really caring about the others witnessing him like that. They already know, what more would he hide?
And if possible, Umika turned a shade redder. And the class's volume went up a notch.
