Chapter 1
Ainosuke started when he felt something wet touched his cheeks.
He opened his eyes to see Rin.
He smiled. "Good morning, Rin..." he said as he patted his dog on her head.
And then he sat up.
He hadn't realized he had fallen asleep on the table.
The table was a mess. Full of scattered papers.
He remembered what had happened last night.
Shuhei had visited him. The guy only had few days off and still he makes time to check up on him; as he did yesterday.
They just hung out and chatted for a bit
Shuhei lived just across the street. He was living alone as well. He had been orphaned since he was little and had been passed to more than one family. Now, as he can finally fend for himself, he had rented an apartment there.
They have been friends ever since he moved. They were very similar. Both orphans, both living alone, both having seen pain beyond their years.
Shuhei had gone home at around 9 with Ainosuke threatening to drag him out. It wasn't that he didn't like his company; he just knew the guy needed rest. He currently has four jobs. He didn't have much to pay for but he was helping his friend to send the said friend's sister to university.
He knew Shuhei must be worried for him, but the guy should take care of himself as well.
When he was gone, Ainosuke had started with his own work.
Just a part-time job. He is a freelance sketch artist. Just a home-base job. He would search for sketching projects across the web and he would be paid online as well. Of course apart from this, he also has other jobs.
Ainosuke looked at his work so far.
He sighed. It was really a mess.
He started gathering his drawings.
But then he stopped.
He hadn't realized he'd drawn Kuroda Seira.
He picked up more of his drawings.
There was more of her.
"What is happening to me?" he asked out loud.
Kuroda Seira. Ainosuke wondered how she was. It had been -- he looked at his calendar -- it was just three days since he last saw her.
Ainosuke glanced back at the calendar.
His eyes widen.
"Oh crap! I need to go to the hospital... My test results would be released today..."
---
Ainosuke stood up when the door to the doctor's quarter opened.
Terada-sensei walked in holding a brown envelops.
Ainosuke bowed in greeting. The doctor bowed back and both of them sat.
"Tanaka-san, I've got your results here."
"Hai..."
He had opened the envelope.
"This is the result of your MRI..."
---
Ainosuke closed the door to the doctor's room.
"You've had eye transplant before?"
He felt a bit dizzy. He didn't know what to think at all.
He held up his hand to his right eye.
"It would be best to stay here for the meantime for more observation..."
"Sensei... that is, 'observation as treatment,' isn't it?" Ainosuke cut in. And sensei went silent.
"Sensei... is it okay if I go home, though? I'll be more than willing to go back... but I don't really wanna stay here in the hospital." Ainosuke said after a while.
He sighed and looked at the paper in his hands. Sensei's prescription.
"You are free to do so, Tanaka-san, but still it would be best to have someone around. Do you live with your family?"
"Yes..." Ainosuke lied.
Sensei nodded. "Very well, I'll just prescribe some medicine for today. Please come back here after five days so we could reassess your eye. And please bring a family member with you."
There was some noise. Ainosuke looked up and saw her.
Kuroda Seira. 'She's still here!'
He smiled. For a while he had forgotten everything.
He was about to call her but she just passed him by. She didn't seem to have seen him.
Ainosuke stared at her back. She seemed to have changed somehow.
"There she is." He heard someone say. He looked at where the voice came. It was one of the nurses.
The nurses, too, were looking at Seira.
"She's not very nice as the media made her out to be." She said shrewdly, "Probably paid the press to say all those things about her."
The other nurse nodded. "I know! She's so fake. And she always smiles. I mean, her boyfriend is dying but it's as if she doesn't care."
Ainosuke was about to say something but someone had beaten him to it.
"Excuse me."
It was a tall girl with long curly hair. She looked livid. Behind her was a girl who looked as angry as the first girl was.
Nevertheless, the tall girl smiled at them.
"I'm sorry, but I don't really like hearing someone talk behind people's back... It's very unladylike." She said coolly and with a sarcastic smile.
And then she glared at them. The nurses scurried away.
The shorter girl was about to follow Seira but the taller one stopped her.
"Let her be." She said simply.
"But Maria-san..." The other girl said.
She only smiled sadly at her and gestured for them to go back.
Ainosuke watched them go, confused.
What had happened?
Deciding for a moment, he started walking towards the rooftop, following Seira.
It was silent on the rooftop.
It was very different from what Ainosuke remembered that last time he was there.
'Well, it was dark then...' Ainosuke thought.
There was a garden on the rooftop. It was a very relaxing view.
He had spotted Seira by one of the benches near the edge of the rooftop.
He just looked at her for a while.
She was frowning, and seems to be deep in thought.
Frowning himself, he made his way towards her.
It seems she heard him approach because she looked up.
She automatically smiled at him and made a small bow in greeting.
Her smile was somehow different.
Ainosuke stopped a feet away from her.
They stared at each other for a while and then.
"Kuroda-san..." Ainosuke said.
Seira blinked and looked more closely at him, pondering. Seems she hadn't recognized him before.
After a few seconds, she spoke.
"Tanaka-san...?" She asked.
He smiled and nodded. "I'm glad you still remember me."
There was a pause.
"Uhm." Ainosuke started again. "Can I sit...?" He trailed off.
"Oh, of course. Sure, please have a seat." Seira said smiling. Her smile was definitely different from before. Ainosuke didn't like this smile.
The sparkle in her eyes was gone. Her eyes were cold, as if lifeless.
Ainosuke took a seat and again the both of them fell silent.
"Ah..." Seira said. She seems to be fidgeting. "You have a check-up or something? Uhm, it's okay if you don't want to answer. I'm sorry."
Ainosuke smiled and shook his head. "I have an appointment with my doctor." He said simply.
Another pause and then Ainosuke looked at her.
"Uhm, if you don't mind me asking, but are you okay? You seem to be... well, not okay..." 'Lifeless' Ainosuke thought. He didn't really know why he cared so much. And he couldn't understand why trying to comfort Kuroda-san, somehow he felt comforted as well.
She smiled again, but this time Ainosuke was relieved to see that at least there was something that seemed to change in her eyes.
"I'm okay. Thank you for your concern." Seira said to him.
Ainosuke smiled and nodded...
Even though he knew it was a lie.
To be continued...
