I know I'm a little late on this, but I might as well share the good news. So yesterday, between my afternoon classes, I decided to give the hard drive surgery another go before taking it in and paying lots of money for them to do it at the Apple Store. I read about another method of removing the old drive and replacing it by taking off the bracket from the other side, the side I was unsure about taking it off from. But I managed to take out the appropriate screws, take out the bracket and the hard drive, and with some very careful maneuvering, I managed to get the hard drive and the bracket back in, and screw the bracket down again, exactly as before. It was a very tricky operation, I had to move some wires, remove the leads for my battery to the power unit.
I took some pictures when I was finished, and once I'm all set up again, I'll put them up. I had to remove a total of 18 screws to complete the operation, but everything went smoothly. The inside of Powerbooks is quite amazing, the layout is very logical and neat now, apparently much improved from previous versions. If I had to do this again, or do it for someone else, I think I can confidently say that I can do it now.
After installing and putting everything back where it should be, I booted up off the Tiger DVD and everything went smoothly, did a clean install of Tiger, and now I'm slowly rebuilding everything. I had about 71 GB of data total on that hard drive (no, not very much room left for a hard drive of that size). Of that data, here's the breakdown of my loss, and how much of it I had some sort of backup to recover from:
- Papers/random files and documents: around 2GB -- almost none recovered
- Music: 43GB -- Only had about 9GB between my iPod and some of my backup CDs, many more CDs at home, estimating about 10 GB unrecoverable
- Pictures: Of just pictures I've taken, about 6-7GB -- 5GB recoverable
- Photoshopped pictures: This includes my large collection of rotating desktop pictures, about 2GB -- 100MB recoverable
- Other data: Don't really care enough about the rest.
So some stuff, even with a with a little work and some patience, I can get back, but some vital data is now gone forever. Though, I've now accepted this, it still sucks that there's some stuff I'll never see again, but I've learned quite a bit now. I'm going to try to buy another external hard drive soon, something large capacity and relatively inexpensive, to do backups and store little used yet useful files.
Though the process is slow, things are going well, and I think I'll be quite happy with this new hard drive. I think I'll be dissecting my old hard drive soon, either that or keep it around somewhere, but right now, it's a pretty expensive paperweight. Anyone who wants to check it out, let me know, I think I'll put some pictures up soon of it as well.
